Safy trumpeted sharply and charged straight into the river. She hadn’t expected the water to be so deep—it nearly reached her shoulders. Standing firm, she sucked in a trunkful of river water and blasted it at the pack of hyenas.
The hyenas stumbled back a few paces, startled but still glaring hungrily from the bank.
Safy sprayed again and again until they finally retreated farther away, their snarls fading into the wind.
“Good girl,” Jackson murmured, stroking her head. But the sight of the beasts still lingering nearby made his stomach twist.
Then Safy let out another cry and began pacing restlessly in the shallows. She sucked up more water and suddenly sprayed to the side.
