Jackson walked away without looking back, leaving the fire roaring behind him. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, curling upward like a dark mushroom cloud.
“Joseph, come here—look! Isn’t that smoke coming from their side?” Kayla stood at the mouth of the cave, frowning at the rising plume. That area wasn’t far from Jackson’s camp. Could it be…?
“What the hell are you yelling about? Can’t you see I’m trying to sleep?” Joseph grumbled, stumbling out of the cave with a scowl.
“All you ever do is sleep,” Kayla shot back, irritation sharp in her voice. “Look—over there.” She pointed toward the black smoke.
Sheree rushed out next, following Kayla’s finger. “Oh, damn… it really is their place. How did it catch fire?”
