Before the Party - Pigeon

1190 Words
A/N: I know I broke my perfect pattern with "The White Wolf" but I don't care. 3000+ words for a single chapter is too much. Get over it.  Love y'all! ********************     I took a breath, waiting for Grace to reply. I’d just finished telling her about my walk with Collin and Abby in the woods earlier, where I’d met the strangest acting wolf in my life. “It seems like you should have told the park director, I don’t think that that wolf is sane. Maybe it ate some bad deer. Oh, you need to start getting ready for the party, it’s almost seven.” I sighed and rolled my eyes. It was clear that Grace was not going to be as baffled or intrigued as I was by the wolf. Besides, I didn’t want it to get hurt. Even if the way it acted was very abnormal... One Hour Later     “I cannot wait for this! Your first frat party! My little baby’s growing up!” Grace saw on her bed, clutching one of her many, many throw pillows as she waited for me to finish my makeup. “I heard that there’ll be some decent alcohol here, my God, Garrett’s party two weeks ago, that sucked.” I sighed and shook my head before quickly signing ‘Wouldn’t know, I wasn’t there.’ and resuming applying a highlighter that Grace demanded I try out tonight. “Okay, let’s not blind everyone there, Pidge,” she said, stealing the brush and compact from my hands before squealing and handing me a tube of lipstick.     “This will go perfectly with your outfit! Come on, release that inner bad b***h tonight! You are a SOPHOMORE in COLLEGE, Pigeon. One crop top and some red lipstick will not kill you.” Sighing, I took the tube from her before inspecting the color. Placing it on the little desk that she had brought from home, I fired off ‘You don’t know that! Besides, I don’t like that much attention on me; I already get enough being mute at this damn private school.’ Grace rolled her eyes before saying, “Honey. You ride Carter’s old Harley at a school where the parking lot is filled with, admittedly dinged, Mercedes and older BMW's. You get plenty of attention, and tonight, you’re going to have all of it, so help me God.” Shoving the lipstick back into my hand and pursing her lips, I rolled my own eyes before carefully applying it.     ‘Okay, I have to admit, it does go really well with this thing.’ I pinched the shirt so she would know which “thing” I was referencing. While it was rather nice, and it fit my personality perfectly, I much preferred a sweatshirt to a crop top that read “f**k You. (but not literally, I have standards)” in large black letters across the upper stomach. With a huge smile, Grace informed me that I looked better in it than she did. ‘I sincerely doubt that.’ I signed before grabbing a hair tie and pulling my hair into an artfully messy bun. Standing from the stool that we kept with the makeup desk, I crossed the room and grabbed my leather moto jacket before completing the look by trading my sweatpants and slippers for dark wash skinny jeans and a pair of high heeled converse shoes.     “Damn girl! You are on fire!” Grace had gone back to sitting on her bed, and when I shook my head, she threw a throw pillow at me. I let it hit me in the shoulder and waited a second before pouting and signing ‘Kiss it to make me feel better?’ when she looked concerned, to which she replied: “You can be a brutal b***h, you know that?” It was in good fun, she knew I didn’t care that she waved a rainbow flag. With a smirk, I signed ‘I know.’ before turning around to sit on my own bed.     She’d had a legitimate reason for being concerned though, she knew I struggled with my anemia and that I bruised easily. Not being hit with a pillow easy, but much easier than other people. It was probably the third thing I told her once she told me she was fluent in ASL. I was mute, not deaf, but I still relied heavily on the sight-based language to get through day to day activities. Looking at the clock, Grace sighed before smiling wickedly and saying “Go look in that mirror one last time, cause I’m sure that you won’t be having any time to yourself tonight!” Bouncing up, I went and looked in the full-length mirror, and while I looked amazing, there was something missing.     Biting my lip, I made a fast and bold decision. Pulling the silver chain from under the shirt, I let the blood-red crescent moon dangle for a moment before letting it fall. It hung perfectly, just above the words, and gave a tiny bit of sparkle. Plus, it was a shade darker than the red lipstick, which made the whole look blend together. Grace placed her hands on my shoulders and looked in the mirror as well.     Looks wise, Grace was the summer to my winter. With her golden blonde shoulder length hair, clear lake water blue eyes, and skin that hovered on being tan but not quite all year, she was the antithesis to me. My waist-length hair was the same color as a tree in winter, dark brown but almost black, and with my pale-ish skin, I was fairly basic, until you reached my eyes. With my right eye being a mix of amber and cognac brown, it stood out from the rest of my features but still fit the brown motif.     It was my left that was the stunner. My left eye was a bottle green, vibrant in comparison to my other features, and many people assumed that I wore contacts to achieve the heterochromatic look.     However, my heterochromia developed naturally between my tenth and eleventh birthdays, after I was blood bound to a witch through the very necklace that was laying on my chest. Sometimes, I wondered if my eyes, which had been a muddled hazel, had changed because of the magic.     “Hey, we’ve got to go if we’re going to grab dinner with Collin, Abby, and Jess. Jess just texted me that they are leaving now. So go get that sexy ass in my car, cause you know that I refuse to ride the Harley.” Grace’s voice snapped me from my thoughts and I nodded slowly, reaching for my purse as she held the door to our dorm open. “Let’s go girl! Time for you to meet your destiny!”
