Grace looked at me dumbfounded. I looked down and scratched the back of my neck, suddenly nervous.
Why do I care what she thinks?
Maybe because she's Mate's best friend?
Oh, right...
I sighed, waiting for her to say something.
"My best non-pack friend? Really Tyler? You think you're Mated to Pigeon?" I winced slightly at her tone- clearly doubting me. "I know I am." came my quiet response. "But she- she's HUMAN. Human, Tyler. It's impossible." Her eyes widened and she gasped, clearly making a connection. "Jackson's fur is white. You're her white wolf, aren't you? f**k, Tyler, what have you done?!"
Her white wolf. She talked about us, Jax.
I like that. Her's.
"I came to you- the only Mated pack member here- for advice is what I tried to do! Grace, please, I don't even understand it! That's why I was talking to Dad." I ran a hand over my face, exasperated. "And what did Alpha Marcus have to say?" she demanded, trying to make herself sound angry, but I could see in her eyes that she was terrified. For the Pack or me or Pigeon, I couldn't tell.
She's just a Delta. She doesn't get to talk to us like this.
Jackson stop.
No! You'll be Alpha soon! If one Delta won't obey you then how are you going to control all of them?
We will get there.
I sighed quietly, saying "He didn't say a lot. But he'll be here Sunday morning." while pointing to the door. "Oh, so you think this is over? Well, I got-" "Shut up, Grace! I'm trying to SHOW you something. Now, find her. And you'll see." I interrupted her again, refusing to take no for an answer. She turned and opened the door, only to turn back and say, "For your sake, and the Pack's, I hope I don't. Let's go."
My shoulders sagged as I followed her out, and saw her texting furiously. Instantly on alert, I looked over her shoulder to see what she was typing.
"WHAT THE f**k PIGEON?! WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!?!" popped up in a blue bubble on her screen. "Wait what! What did she do? Grace, please, what-"
"She jumped off the roof of the house and into the tree..." Grace's voice trailed off quickly as blood rushed in my ears, anger, and fear competing for the dominating emotion.
She did WHAT?
Oh my Goddess, is she okay?
Tyler, calm down! Please!
She could've been killed, Jax! Killed!
TYLER!
I'd frozen in place, my muscles locking in an attempt to stop a Shift. My emotions were spiraling, and if I didn't get myself under control soon, everyone here would see me become a white wolf.
Grace was already across the street when she noticed I wasn't following her. Running back to me, she grabbed my arm and pulled me around behind the truck, frantically whispering "Tyler, it's fine, she's safe, she's okay." Her face captured the pure shock and disbelief of her realizing I was not shitting her earlier.
Pigeon was my Mate. For better or worse.
Grace's face lit up, and she pulled her phone out and dialed someone. My vision began to blur and my hands were quaking, along with every other part of my body. Heart pounding, I could barely make out the shape of Grace talking quickly into her phone.
After a minute she touched my arm and showed me a series of images. All of them were of Pigeon, and they were recent. The last was a short video, the boy from the lake was asking her if she was okay. Flipping her hair and turning, she smiled into the camera while rolling her eyes.
Everything stopped with that smile. My heart slowed, my hands stopped shaking, I could take a deep breath again, my vision came back to me. Gulping down air, I no longer was afraid or even angry. Pure relief, like the feeling of medication suddenly starting to work and all the pain you were feeling goes out the window.
"Tyler, she's fine. Stupid, but fine." Grace whispered as she replayed the video, again and again, seeming to understand that I needed to see her. "Can you walk now?" she asked quietly, tucking her phone into her jacket. Blinking rapidly, I realized that I was kneeling on the side of the road. Pushing myself up, I held onto the side of my truck for stability.
"You weren't joking. I'm sorry. I didn't think that would- that you would..." Grace started and stopped, her mind clearly reeling. "That I would react like that? Me either." I whispered, swallowing down the lump that had formed in my throat. "That is what we call the Danger Reaction. When Jess told me what they had done to her in her old pack-" Grace broke off and growled quietly, unable to control her wolf for a moment. "I couldn't control Hazel. I Shifted instantly and stood there growling for I don't even remember how long. Jess had to tell me about it when I came back to her."
"Anytime your Mate could be in danger, your wolf takes over. Or tries to, in your case. I'm honestly shocked you held Jax back." Grace continued to babble as we walked around the side of the house and through the gate. Seeing the bonfire, I found Pigeon quickly and strode toward her and the boy from the lake.
Grace grabbed my arm, quickly telling me that he was Collin and he was her translator. "Trust me, he is very happy with his girl. I had Jess ask him about it when you were freaking out. Also, remember, Pigeon and Collin aren't wolves. No growling, okay?" "Yeah, sure. Let's go! I wanna meet her!" I slipped for a moment as Jax whined in excitement. Grace rolled her eyes and laughed. "Let's go lover boy."
Striding over to the bonfire, I could fully see Pigeon now, and Goddess, she was even more gorgeous than I remembered her.
So that's what was up with her eyes. She's got heterochromatic eyes.
I don't care what they're called, they are stunning.
"So, you're the famous Tyler Young, right?" Collin stood to my right, and translated for me. I hadn't even realized that she'd been trying to talk to me. "Sure am. And you're the famous Pigeon, right?" I continued to stare at her, noticing the way her freckles seemed to shift with the firelight, mesmerizing me. I chuckled and half smiled when she rolled her eyes and flipped her hair over her shoulder before smiling and nodding.
"Well, it's nice to meet you. Officially at least." Collin translated again, sounding bored. "And it's nice to meet you. Officially." I bit my cheek and decided to be bold, grabbing her hand and bringing it to my lips.
It was like lightning in a bottle being released, the explosion that formed the universe, a fire on the ocean being lit, a level ten earthquake beneath our feet.
It was that feeling of perfection, like watching the sunrise on a beach, or waking up to a white Christmas, or finding the best song to play as the night ended.
She gasped quietly, and I knew she felt it too. Everything.
