The morning air was crisp as Elena walked down the sidewalk, her bag slung over her shoulder. The streets of Glimmerwood were still quiet, with only a few early risers moving about. She didn't mind; she liked the peacefulness before the chaos of school.
"So, did you hear about the new kid?" Matt asked, catching up to her. He was chewing on a piece of gum, his brown hair messy as always.
"New kid?" Elena glanced at him.
"Yeah. Jason something. Transferred in yesterday. I heard he’s kind of weird but ridiculously good-looking. Girls are already losing their minds over him."
Elena frowned slightly. "That’s… surprising. Not many people move here."
"I know, right? Maybe he’s running from something," Matt joked, nudging her. "Or maybe he’s some kind of spy agent. Think about it—he comes out of nowhere, good-looking, mysterious. Totally screams secret mission."
Elena rolled her eyes. "You watch too many movies."
"Okay, okay, then what if—hear me out—he’s a vampire?" Matt wiggled his fingers dramatically.
Elena scoffed. "Yeah, definitely not one."
As they entered the school grounds, a small group of girls was already gathered near the entrance, whispering excitedly. Among them was Brittany, flipping her blonde hair as she strutted toward a tall figure walking through the gates.
Jason.
He was making his way toward the school entrance, his posture relaxed yet confident. His dark brown hair framed his sharp features, and even from a distance, his piercing gaze gave off an air of cool indifference.
Brittany wasted no time intercepting him, standing directly in his path with a coy smile. "My, my, aren’t you a striking one? It seems fortune has smiled upon you today. You’ve just earned an exclusive invitation to my party next weekend."
Jason arched an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Is that so?"
Brittany gave a dramatic sigh, twirling a strand of her hair. "Obviously. Only the most refined and desirable individuals are permitted to attend. Consider it an honor."
He let the silence stretch between them before replying, "I’ll think about it."
Brittany’s smile didn’t waver. "Playing hard to get? I find that… intriguing."
Jason merely chuckled, brushing past her and heading inside. Brittany stared after him, clearly interested.
Throughout the day, Jason kept to himself, but he didn't go unnoticed. In every class, his presence seemed to draw attention. When called upon, he responded with a dry, almost lazy sarcasm that earned either laughter or glares from teachers.
In history class, the teacher went on about medieval conflicts, confidently stating a fact about a famous battle.
Jason, who had been resting his chin on his hand, muttered, "Actually, that’s not entirely true."
The teacher turned to him, frowning. "Excuse me?"
Jason straightened up slightly. "You said the battle lasted two days, but in reality, the first day was just posturing. The real fight happened on the second day. And the commander didn't fall in battle—he died from poisoning weeks later."
A hush fell over the room as the teacher blinked, clearly thrown off. "And… where exactly did you read this?"
Jason smirked. "Let’s just say I have my sources."
The rest of the class stared at him in curiosity, but Jason said nothing more, returning to his usual indifferent expression.
At lunch, Jason sat alone at one of the outside tables, casually picking at his food while observing the other students. He had no real interest in socializing, but it seemed that wasn’t up to him.
Brittany approached his table, a confident smile on her face as she set down her tray and took the seat across from him uninvited. "So… have you thought about it?"
Jason raised an eyebrow. "About what?"
She gave an exaggerated sigh. "My party, of course. It’s only the most exclusive event this school has seen. And let’s be honest, you belong there."
Jason leaned back slightly, regarding her with an unreadable expression. "You’re really persistent, aren’t you?"
Brittany beamed. "I don’t waste time with things that aren’t worth it."
Jason let the silence linger for a moment, then gave a lazy smirk. "I’ll let you know."
Brittany tilted her head, intrigued. "Mysterious and indecisive. Dangerous combination."
Jason simply shrugged, returning his attention to his food. Satisfied she had made an impression, Brittany stood, flipping her hair before sauntering off to rejoin her friends.
After school, the deep purr of an engine drew attention as a sleek black Phantom Rolls-Royce pulled up near the school entrance. Students glanced over curiously, whispering among themselves.
Jason walked toward the car, and as he opened the door, the man in the driver’s seat—Valverde—glanced at him with a knowing smirk.
"Party, huh?" Valverde mused.
Jason slid into the seat, leaning back against the leather interior. "Did you eavesdrop on me the whole day?"
Valverde chuckled, pulling away from the school. "Wouldn’t you like to know."
Jason sighed, rubbing his temple. "Shut up, Valverde."
With a low chuckle, Valverde drove off, the car disappearing down the road, leaving behind more questions than answers.
