Chapter 5: Pay Off Doctor, AZGustavo paced outside the best room at Miss Rose’s Place. Thanks to her, the local doctor was in with Alfie, but last Gustavo saw, it didn’t look good.
“Here. You need both of these.” Miss Rose handed him a wet cloth and a shot glass filled to the brim with amber sustenance. “You’re safe. Alfie’s safe. Put the rest outta your head, Gustavo.”
It was easier said than done with the sounds of frantic whinnying still in his ears, the heat of flames still on his skin, and the sight of it all refusing to go blank in his head. All that was bad enough. Seeing Alfie bloodied, battered, writhing in pain, agony so intense it took away Alfie’s voice so he couldn’t even call out from it, for Gustavo, remembering all of that was even worse.
“Doc needs to tend to you, too.”
