Chapter 3: A Warning from the Moon Goddess?

1062 Words
Zaros couldn't get that new woman, Gina, off of his mind. As the gentleman walked toward his chauffeur, he was completely lost in thought. He got into the car and placed a hand on his forehead, trying to break down what he knew about her. It was fairly rare that he brought outsiders into the company - his pack managed things just fine - but recently, one more person to help out would be a boon, mistakes or not. He had the strongest confidence she would take those resources he provided seriously. That, unfortunately, wasn't the main problem, however. Even if she did all she could with what he provided, that dream complicated things. Was it a sign from the Moon Goddess? But she had not sent any relevant information to him or his pack in a century. Why now, through a human, of all things? Not that he viewed humans as lesser; far from it. In his eyes, all had the potential to learn magic, but were too oblivious to ever try. The paranormal world hiding from them due to fear of retaliation and war certainly didn't help, even if it was a necessary evil. However, Gina's scent alerted him to something more about her. 'She has witch blood. I'm sure of it,' Zaros thought to himself, a scowl forming on his face. 'What could that mean for us? Did the Moon Goddess send her to my pack for some reason?' “Zaros, you alright?" He looked up to the passenger, fixing his stare on Jecht. His Beta was eyeing Zaros as if he had two heads. “You have that 'I'm upset and it'll be like pulling teeth to get me to say it' expression on your face." Zaros looked at his Beta and rolled his eyes, letting out a sigh and rubbing his temples. “Jecht, I'm–" “Don't say you're fine." “...Things are complicated," Zaros finally said, glaring out of the window. He took his Beta's words and concerns seriously, but admittedly was stubborn at times like this. Jecht glared at his Alpha, crossing his arms and resolving to bring this up when they got back to the den. The Beta wolf ran his fingers through his wispy blonde hair, grumbling to himself. His soft brown eyes sparked with concern as he tried to consider what his Alpha could be so worried about. Just a glance told him a lot. Zaros's body language was subtle, but his jaw was clenched, and his muscles were taut, as if he may launch himself at some enemy at a moment's notice. When they finally pulled into the driveway of a gigantic three-story house in one of the city neighborhoods, Jecht exited the car and nodded in appreciation to the driver, a new wolf eager to please. He said, “It can be tough getting used to driving in the city, but you're adapting well." The shifter beamed at him, wandering into the house to allow Jecht and Zaros some time to talk while they made their way inside as well. The Alpha wore a deep frown as he walked toward the pale-brick house with a simple grey roof that towered over most of the houses in the suburbs here. The yard was a bit overgrown, with vines crawling up some areas of the house and some trees swaying in the cold autumn wind. Silence stretched until the Beta broke it. “You know you can tell me," he told Zaros, who side-eyed his fellow shifter wordlessly. Finally, the Alpha unclenched his jaw, letting out a long, drawn out sigh as he placed a hand on the door to enter their den. He entered a long hallway with pristine wooden flooring, polished to perfection. Paintings were fastened on the wall of forests quite similar to what Zaros had in his office. Wandering past a few rooms, Zaros collapsed onto a large cushioned leather chair, the scent of woodsmoke rising through the air due to the recently-lit fireplace flickering in front of him. The room, full of warm earthy colors like deep greens and browns, did little to comfort him like it typically did. Not with that 'issue' latched onto his mind. When Jecht got settled in a chair across from him, leaning forward with his elbows resting on the back of his legs in wait, the Alpha finally spilled what was on his mind. “The new employee, Gina. I wanted to meet with her regarding a few mistakes she made. I assumed it was first-day stress. Well. It could, perhaps, be much more," Zaros explained. He let out a breath, fixing his eyes upon Jecht as he explained, not breaking eye contact as much as he wanted to leave and lose himself in his own mind. “Not only does she have witch blood, but she had a particularly interesting dream." Blinking once, then twice, Jecht furrowed his brow. This was a lot to take in, but he waited for his Alpha to continue. By the time Zaros finished explaining this entire situation with the new employee to him, the Beta's jaw had practically dropped. “Let me get this straight," Jecht said. “This new woman likely had a dream from the Moon Goddess, something we have not seen for a century, and also has witch's blood. Am I hearing you correctly, Zaros?" The Alpha gave a nod, scowling deeply. “Yes. This may be a sign for–" A woman burst into the room, panting. Some of her light brunette hair fell into her face, her medium-tan skin littered with fresh lacerations that were knitting themselves together as they spoke. “Alpha!" she sputtered. “Vampires have moved into our city. I spotted one bloodsucker dragging a human off into an alleyway. I moved in to stop them but was ambushed and barely escaped." “A sudden show of aggression," Zaros snarled, standing from his seat and waving his hand. “Regardless of the reason, we will defend this territory and people. Jecht, we will discuss what has come up later. Allison, get to the healer immediately, please." 'I need any wolf who can patrol to met me in the front of the packhouse immediately,' he sent to his pack telepathically, flexing his fingers and mentally preparing himself for an inevitable clash with city invaders.
