Unspoken storms

1134 Words
The morning breeze drifted gently across Amara’s face as she stepped out of the house her bag slung over her shoulder She paused for a moment at the gate staring down the familiar street It was the same road she took every day yet today it felt heavier beneath her feet The tension in her home the whispers in school and most of all Tunde’s strange distance all blended into a knot inside her chest. She took a long breath and began the walk to school As she approached the school compound she could already hear the rising chatter of students The noise felt louder than usual. She pushed through the crowd and entered the hallway Her steps slowed when she saw him Tunde He was leaning against the locker, one hand in his pocket the other gripping a water bottle Usually he greeted people with a quick smile but today his face was unreadable his eyes slightly dull When he noticed Amara his expression flickered as though caught between wanting to speak and wanting to disappear He looked away first A small sting ran through her chest, but she squared her shoulders and walked past him She was not angry not exactly but she hated feeling like she was the only one trying to understand what had gone wrong Inside the classroom Amara settled into her seat She pulled out her books hoping the morning lessons would at least distract her But they didn’t She found herself glancing at Tunde more times than she wanted to admit. He did not raise his hand during class did not joke with his friends did not even look in her direction Something was off Very off During break Amara stepped into the walkway behind the library hoping for quiet She rested her hands on the cool railing and exhaled She had been trying for days to make sense of Tunde’s sudden change how someone who used to talk easily with her now struggled to even look at her. She was not expecting company Amara a voice called softly She turned It was Tunde He looked uncertain his fingers tapping rhythmically against the strap of his backpack Can we talk he asked Amara hesitated Part of her wanted to say yes immediately Another part wanted to ask a hundred questions first Instead she simply nodded Tunde took a step closer through he kept a respectable distance. About the past few days His voice trailed off He looked down at his shoes as if searching for the right words I am sorry I’ve been off Amara crossed her arms not in anger but to steady herself You just stopped talking to me I didn’t know what happened I know he replied quietly I wasn’t trying to ignore you Things at home got tough Amara’s posture softened slightly She had not expected that answer. My uncle has been staying with us he continued And he and my dad haven’t been getting along The arguments have been loud almost every night I couldn’t sleep and I didn’t want anyone asking questions But you could have told meAmara said gently I would have understood Tunde nodded guilt flickering across his face I thought I could handle it alone They fell silent for a moment A few students walked by the corridor but didn’t stop. Amara spoke first You don’t have to disappear because something is wrong You are allowed to lean on people you care about Tunde’s eyes lifted to hers at that Not intense not romantic just honest. You’ are right he murmured I am trying to do better Amara nodded Good It wasn’t a grand reconciliation. It wasn’t dramatic But something small and necessary shifted back into place between them Classes resumed and although the day moved slowly the tension between them had eased. By the time school closed Amara felt lighter She packed her bag and stepped into the hallway. She didn’t expect Tunde to be waiting at the door Are you going home now he asked. She blinked Yes I will walk with you if that’s okay Amara hesitated only for a heartbeat before nodding It is fine They walked side by side out of the school compound The afternoon sun cast long shadows behind them and the breeze carried the distant sound of children playing Neither of them rushed to speak It wasn’t uncomfortable just thoughtful. Halfway down the road Tunde finally spoke. You remember when we were in JSS 2 and you helped me with that science project he asked a faint smile tugging at his lips. Amara actually smiled You mean the one you nearly ruined because you spilled glue on your entire table He chuckled Exactly You yelled at me for being careless I yelled because you were careless Amara corrected But you still stayed and helped me finish he said Even though it meant staying an hour after school She shrugged It wasn’t a big deal It was to me His voice grew softer It still is They continued walking. Amara felt a quiet warmth in her chest not overwhelming not confusing Just warmth You have always been someone I could trust Tunde said carefully Even when things at home are not great Amara slowed her steps I am glad you feel that way He nodded looking relieved to have said it. Nothing dramatic followed No gestures, no exaggerated emotions Just two teenagers walking home finding peace in each other’s company At the junction where their paths split Amara stopped This is where I turn I know Tunde said smiling a little Thanks for walking with me You asked me to she teased lightly And I am glad I did Amara adjusted her bag Tomorrow Tomorrow he echoed She turned and headed toward her house. Her steps felt steadier than they had in days Behind her she could sense Tunde walking in the opposite direction lighter too, as if finally unburdened At home Amara helped her mother prepare dinner The kitchen was warmfilled with the comforting scent of spices Her mother glanced at her face as she chopped onions You seem calmer today her mother observed quietly Amara smiled faintly I talked things out with a friend Her mother nodded knowingly but didn’t pry Good Talking helps Later that night as Amara settled at her desk to finish her homework her phone buzzed A message from Tunde Thanks for giving me a chance to explain Amara typed slowly You do not need a chance You just need honesty No hearts No dramatics Just truth She set her phone down feeling a sense of balance she had been missing Maybe things wouldn’t be perfect Maybe tomorrow would bring new challenges. But for now the storm between them had calmed And that was enough.
