Rose and Janet had been so engrossed in their conversation that they did not see a man seated a few paces away pretending to be concentrating on an article in a certain journal . Unbeknownst to Rose , the man had been tailing her since she had left home . He could see that they were having a serious talk , but he could not make out what they were saying .
