**A Deal with the Alpha** The moon had climbed higher in the sky, its light spilling through the arched windows of the mansion’s great hall. The tension from Lucian’s unexpected proposal lingered, casting a heavy pall over the gathering. Aria Hayes stood frozen, her mind racing as the eyes of the pack bore into her. She could still feel Lucian’s gaze, unyielding and filled with a determination that unsettled her. This was not a conversation she had expected to have tonight—or ever. The elders stood at the edges of the hall, their expressions a mix of skepticism and disdain. They had been demanding answers, insisting on tradition and propriety, but Lucian’s bold move had left them speechless. Aria could sense their disapproval. She wasn’t Kara, the carefully chosen mate who embodied the pack’s ideals. She was an outsider, a lone wolf with no allegiance and even less interest in the politics of pack life. But now, she was the only option standing between Lucian and a potential uprising. Lucian broke the silence first. “We need to talk,” he said, his voice low but commanding. He gestured toward a smaller room off to the side, away from the prying eyes of the pack. Aria hesitated for a moment, her instincts screaming at her to refuse, to run, but something in Lucian’s tone made her follow. Inside the room, the atmosphere shifted. It was quieter, more intimate, the walls lined with shelves of old books and faded photographs. The heavy scent of aged paper hung in the air, and the dim lighting cast long shadows that stretched across the floor. Lucian closed the door behind them, his expression serious but not unkind. “Aria, I know this is... unexpected,” Lucian began, his voice losing some of its earlier edge. “But I need you to understand the position I’m in. The pack is on the brink of chaos, and without a mate, I can’t hold my claim to Alpha.” Aria crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. “So you’re just going to throw tradition out the window? Mate with the first willing body that agrees? That’s not leadership, Lucian—that’s desperation.” Lucian’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t rise to the bait. “This isn’t about tradition. It’s about survival. The pack needs stability, and right now, you’re the only one who can provide that.” Aria shook her head, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. “I’ve never been part of your world, Lucian. I’ve stayed out of it for a reason. I don’t want this life, and I certainly don’t want to play the role of your stand-in mate.” Lucian took a step closer, his gaze intense. “You’re right. You’ve kept to yourself, but I’ve seen you, Aria. You’re stronger than you let on. You don’t want the politics, fine. But you’ve got the guts to stand up when no one else will. That’s why I’m asking you.” Aria felt her resolve waver. She had always prided herself on her independence, on her ability to navigate her own path without relying on anyone else. But Lucian’s words struck a chord, one she wasn’t prepared to confront. She had spent so long hiding from the pack, from her past, and from the expectations placed upon her. Yet here was an opportunity—a dangerous, reckless opportunity—to step into the light and make a difference. “You’re asking a lot,” Aria said quietly, her voice tinged with frustration. “And I still don’t understand why me. There are plenty of others in the pack who would jump at the chance.” Lucian’s expression softened, a rare vulnerability flickering in his eyes. “Because you’re not like them. You don’t care about status or power. You’ve lived in the shadows by choice, not because you were forced there. And that’s exactly what I need—someone who can see beyond the politics and the games.” Aria studied him for a long moment, weighing his words. She could feel the weight of the decision pressing down on her, the pull of something greater than herself. She had always run from the pack’s expectations, but now, standing in this quiet room with Lucian, she wondered if maybe—just maybe—she had been running from something else, too. “Alright,” Aria said finally, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. “I’ll do it. But this is on my terms, Lucian. I’m not going to be paraded around like some prize. We do this, and I stay who I am.” Lucian nodded, relief flashing across his features. “Agreed. We keep this simple. No pretenses, no games.” Aria held his gaze, searching for any hint of deception, but found none. For the first time, she saw Lucian not just as the Alpha, but as someone who was as trapped by his responsibilities as she was by her past. They were both caught in a web of expectations, struggling to find their own way through. They shook hands, sealing the pact between them—a fragile, tenuous agreement that would test both their limits. As they turned to leave the room, the sound of raised voices filtered through the door. Lucian paused, his senses sharpening. Aria caught the faint scent of fear and anger, mingling with the usual scents of the pack. Pushing the door open, they stepped back into the great hall, where chaos had erupted. Pack members were arguing, the elders shouting over the din. At the center of the commotion stood a young scout, out of breath and wide-eyed with panic. “They found her,” the scout gasped, clutching a crumpled piece of fabric in his hands. “They found Kara.” Lucian’s heart lurched. He moved swiftly, snatching the fabric from the scout’s grasp. It was stained with blood, the scent unmistakable. The hall fell into a stunned silence as the implications sank in. Kara wasn’t just missing—she was in danger. And whatever had taken her was still out there, threatening to unravel everything Lucian had fought to protect. Aria watched as Lucian’s expression darkened, the weight of a new threat settling over his shoulders. Their pact had just become infinitely more complicated. Not only did they have to navigate their own tenuous arrangement, but now they were faced with a deadly mystery that could shatter the pack’s fragile stability. Lucian’s eyes met Aria’s, a silent understanding passing between them. They were in this together, whether they liked it or not. And as the pack murmured anxiously around them, Aria knew one thing for certain: nothing would ever be the same again.
