Chapter 3

Emily's heart raced as she started to sort through the papers. She had a feeling that something wasn't right, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. She scanned each page, trying to determine what Nathaniel needed from her. But as she reached the bottom of the pile, Emily's blood ran cold. She had stumbled upon a file that was marked "confidential," and as she opened it, she realized why. The file contained information on Nathaniel's biggest rival, a man named Alexander Kensington. There were notes on his business dealings, his personal life, and even his family members. Emily couldn't believe what she was reading. Nathaniel had a dossier on his competitor, and it was clear that he was using the information to gain an advantage. Emily's mind raced as she tried to figure out what to do. She knew that she had stumbled upon something she wasn't supposed to see, and the implications were massive. If Nathaniel found out that she had seen the file, he would likely fire her on the spot. But if she kept quiet, she would be complicit in his unethical behavior. As she was pondering her options, Nathaniel walked over to her desk. "Emily, are you finished with those papers?" he asked. Emily quickly closed the file and stood up, trying to keep her hands from shaking. "Yes, sir. I just finished." Nathaniel nodded. "Good. I need you to make copies of some of those pages and bring them to me tomorrow morning. We have a meeting with the board of directors, and I want to make sure I have all the information I need." Emily's mind was racing as she tried to come up with a plan. She knew that she couldn't bring the file to Nathaniel, but she also couldn't ignore his request. She needed to figure out a way to get the information to someone who could do something about it, without putting herself in danger. The rest of the evening was a blur, and Emily barely slept that night. She spent hours researching Alexander Kensington and his business dealings, trying to find someone who could help her. She finally settled on a journalist who had written several exposés on corrupt businessmen, and she crafted a carefully-worded email, detailing what she had seen and asking for help. The next morning, Emily arrived at work early, her nerves on edge. She handed the copies to Nathaniel as requested, hoping that he wouldn't sense anything was amiss. But as he looked through them, he paused, his brow furrowing. "Emily, why did you make copies of this file?" he asked, his tone sharp. Emily tried to remain calm. "I thought it would be useful to have them on hand, sir." Nathaniel narrowed his eyes. "I see. Well, make sure you keep them in a secure location. I wouldn't want anything to happen to them." Emily nodded, her heart pounding. She knew that she was playing a dangerous game, but she couldn't back down now. She waited anxiously for a response to her email, hoping that the journalist would be able to help her. Days turned into weeks, and Emily started to feel like she was being watched. She couldn't shake the feeling that Nathaniel knew what she had done, and that he was waiting for the right moment to strike. One day, she arrived at work to find a note on her desk. It was written in Nathaniel's distinctive handwriting, and it simply read: "We need to talk." Emily's heart sank as she read the note. She knew that this was it - Nathaniel had found out about her betrayal, and she was about to face the consequences. She took a deep breath and walked towards his office, her heart pounding As Emily approached Nathaniel's office, her mind raced with possibilities. What would he say? Would he fire her on the spot, or would he try to blackmail her into keeping quiet? She pushed the thoughts aside and focused on putting on a brave face. She knocked on the door and waited for Nathaniel's response. After a few moments, she heard his voice from inside. "Come in, Emily," he said. Emily took a deep breath and opened the door. Nathaniel was sitting behind his desk, his eyes fixed on her as she entered the room. "Close the door behind you," he said, gesturing to the door. Emily did as she was told, her heart pounding in her chest. Nathaniel stood up and walked around the desk, his eyes never leaving Emily's. "Sit down," he said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. Emily sat down, trying to keep her composure. Nathaniel sat down across from her, his hands clasped together on the desk. "Emily, I'm going to be straight with you," he said, his voice calm and measured. "I know what you did." Emily's heart sank as Nathaniel continued. "You went behind my back and contacted a journalist, didn't you?" Emily swallowed hard. She knew that there was no point in denying it. "Yes, sir," she said quietly. Nathaniel leaned forward, his eyes intense. "Do you know what you've done, Emily? You've betrayed my trust. You've put my company at risk. And worst of all, you've put yourself in danger." Emily's heart was pounding in her chest. She knew that she had made a mistake, but she hadn't realized how much of a risk she was taking. "I'm sorry, sir," she said. "I didn't know what else to do." Nathaniel leaned back in his chair, his eyes still fixed on Emily. "I understand that you were trying to do the right thing, Emily," he said. "But you have to understand that there are consequences to your actions. You could have ruined everything I've worked for." Emily felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She had never wanted to hurt Nathaniel, but she had been backed into a corner. "I'm sorry, sir," she said again. Nathaniel sighed and leaned back in his chair. "I'm not going to fire you, Emily," he said. "But I need you to understand that what you did was wrong. You put yourself and this company in danger. And if anything happens, if this information gets out, it's on you." Emily nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She had expected the worst, but Nathaniel was giving her a second chance. "Thank you, sir," she said. "I won't let you down again." Nathaniel looked at her for a moment, his expression unreadable. "I hope not, Emily," he said finally. "Because if you do, there won't be a third chance." Emily left Nathaniel's office feeling a mixture of relief and fear. She had been given a second chance, but she knew that she had to be careful. She couldn't let her guard down, not for a second. As the weeks went on, Emily continued to work hard, trying to prove herself to Nathaniel. She knew that she had made a mistake, but she was determined to make up for it. And slowly but surely, Nathaniel began to trust her again. One day, as Emily was finishing up some paperwork, Nathaniel walked into her office. "Emily, I need to talk to you," he said, his expression serious.
