CHAPTER 4

Two hours passed, and they were finally at Emerald’s Corporation, located in the heart of Chicago. Her father worked hard to make his company strive over the years. His only regret was entrusting his firm to his elder brother, Shaun Campbell. Shaun is nothing but a traitor who wants what he can never have. He had successfully organized a board meeting to remove his brother, Griffin Campbell, from his position. Tricia and her father slid out of the limousine in a hurry. She saw the worried expression on his face and felt pity for him. If only she could help. “What exactly do you want me to do there?” She asked, walking close to her father. “Just stand beautifully,” he smiled, walking elegantly and graciously. As they made their way through, the employees on the first floor quickly lined up and bowed slightly to the CEO of Emerald's corporation. Mr. Griffin waved with a small smile plastered on his face as he made his way through with his daughter. Tricia could feel all eyes on her and covered her face. “Who is she?” Some of the employees whispered. “She looks exactly like Mr. Griffin. Could she be his daughter?” a woman whispered. As Tricia slid into the elevator with her father, her racing heart came to a calm resolve. With her eyes wavering everywhere, Mr. Griffin held onto his daughter's hands to calm her down, flashing a reassuring smile at the poor girl. “You can do this,” he said in a whisper. “I hope so,” Tricia said in reply, tapping her feet against the ground. Soon, the elevator ride came to a stop, and they slid out with their shoulders tall. Mr. Griffin slammed the door against the wall, demanding an explanation. “And what is going on here?” He snapped. “Has it gotten to this brother?” He shot Shaun a fierce look enough to send shivers down his spine. Shaun stood up fiercely, looking deep into his brother's eyes. “We all know you can't run the company anymore. I mean look at you, in a few months you might be long gone. I am doing what I think is best for the company.” “And it includes organizing an emergency board meeting to vote for my removal?” Mr. Griffin asked, sneering at his brother. The rest of the board members lowered their gaze in shame. “Wait, what is he talking about?” Tricia cut in, making her presence known. “What does he mean by you're not fit to run your company?” Griffin exhaled deeply, looking away. He couldn't bring himself to tell her about his illness. Shaun’s attention was drawn to Tricia, and he scrunched his forehead at his brother. “Who is she?” He asked, his expression indifferent. “Did you bring one of your mistresses to the board room? How shameless, Griffin.” “She is not my mistress,” Griffin snapped, clenching his fist. Who is that woman? The board members wondered. Could the rumors be true? Over the years, Shaun had succeeded in ruining his brother's reputation. Griffin Campbell is known to be a chronic womanizer all thanks to his brother's speculations. Griffin had always debunked the rumors, but in the end, he let them be. The boardroom was filled with murmuring and whispers, making the air thin for Tricia. Mr. Griffin took out his cell phone and put a call across to Edward. “I need you in here now,” he ordered and disconnected the call. Edward arrived, bowing to the crowd. “At your service, sir.” “Is the lawyer ready?” Mr. Griffin asked. “Yes, sir,” Edward replied immediately. “Bring him in,” he ordered. “What is this Griffin?” Shaun asked, his eyes darkened. “You'll see,” Griffin said icyly and looked away. In the next few minutes, the lawyer entered and broke the shocking news to the board members, making them panic in their seats. “According to the documents in my hand, it states that Mr. Griffin can pass his company down to anyone fitting the position,” the lawyer announced. “And by right, Miss Tricia is the rightful heir to the company as his daughter.” “What?!” Shaun snapped. “Daughter? He never had a daughter. How is this even possible?” The boardroom was filled with uproar, panic surging through them. What happens now? “We cannot accept this,” Shaun declared. “If she must be the head, then we need proof that she's your daughter.” “Yes,” the rest of the board members said in agreement. “Here,” the lawyer handed over Tricia's DNA test results to clarify the whole situation. “Impossible,” Shaun yelled, storming out of the room. The rest of the employees shamelessly left the boardroom one at a time and Griffin leaned on one of the executive chairs, holding his chest. “Are you okay?” Tricia asked. “Yes I'm fine,” he replied. Mr. Griffin waved his hands and dismissed the rest as he shut his eyes in relief. “Are you ill?” Tricia asked out of the blue, making him open his eyes. “Don't worry about me dear, I'm fine. All I want right now is for you to get working and show them who's boss. You must never bow to their schemes.” “Alright,” she nodded. ** Shaun The moment Shaun got to his office he tossed the books on his desk to the side and groaned in frustration. His eyes darkened as he looked at his reflection in the mirror. “Aaahh!!!” He yelled, slamming his fist against the wall. “What do we do now?” One of the employees asked, “We can't succeed with her in the picture. We need to act fast.” Shaun went straight to his chair and leaned on it, interlocking his hands. “Don't worry, I know exactly how to handle Griffin and his daughter,” he smirked, breathing heavily. ** Shaun It had been six months since Tricia took over her father's company and ever since then, Shaun had been on her neck, always coming up with different schemes to kick her out. Tricia walked into his office after knocking with a reply. “Uncle, I need your advice on the project with M&M Corporations. I was hoping you could fill me in with some details about the couple,” she said with a soft tone. Shaun shot daggers at the young lady and scoffed, “Good luck with getting the contract when you're single,” he swiveled on his chair. “And don't forget, this is your last chance to prove yourself to the company. If you fail, you can kiss your position goodbye.” Tricia was taken aback by his cruelty, “And what are you going to do when that happens?” She summoned the courage to confront him. Tricia moved closer to where he was seated and sneered at him. “I am here to stay, uncle. The sooner you accept it, the better for all of us. I won't let you take my father's company.” “Is that a challenge?” Shaun asked, his gaze cold. Tricia smirked and took a step back, “I'll go now.” She turned around and left his office. “That insolent brat!” Shaun yelled, his jaw clenched. “Watch your back, Tricia Campbell.”
