Damian 's POV
The soft light of the bedside lamp cast long shadows across the room, accentuating the richness surrounding me. I leaned back against the plush pillows, my fingers drumming a rhythmic pattern on the silk sheets. Beside me, Sophia lay gracefully, her presence a familiar comfort. Yet, despite her allure, my thoughts were consumed by another.
Lena.
Her memory haunted me: the flash of her eyes in terror and defiance, the slight quaver in her voice. Since the last time we met, she had been an unwanted visitor in my mind-a puzzle begging to be unraveled. There was this inexplicable tug, this curiosity that needed satiation.
Sophia's voice cut through my reverie, her melodic tones recounting tales I'd heard a thousand times before. I gave her a distracted smile, my attention drifting toward the door, anticipation coiling within me.
A discreet knock interrupted the ambiance. One of my trusted men entered, his posture respectful yet alert. I nodded at him. "Bring her in," I commanded, my voice even, though impatience simmered beneath the surface.
He was out the door in an instant, and a few seconds later, it opened again. Lena filled the frame, her body language uncertain, her eyes wide as they scanned the room before coming to rest on me. The vulnerability emanating from her was almost palpable, but beneath it, a spark of resilience flickered.
Sophia's eyes, too, had followed mine, resting on Lena. A sly smile twisted her lips. "So, you're the new girl," she drawled, condescension lacing every word. "Here to serve Damian , I presume?
I watched as Lena's shoulders slightly tensed, her gaze falling to the floor. She said nothing. She just absorbed that verbal blow and didn't strike back. She looked uncomfortable, and a part of me enjoyed that power play in that.
Sophia pressed on, the entertainment evident in her tone. "I suppose you'll be here to satisfy him, huh?" She giggled, the light, melodious sound so at odds with the viciousness of her words. Lena's gaze darted between us, a frown of confusion and unease upon her face.
A wave of possession swirled inside my belly. I wasn't ready to have Lena dismissed or slighted. There was more I wanted to learn, layers I wanted to strip away.
"I'm keeping her," I said, my tone leaving no room for discussion. An eyebrow winged upwards as Sophia's eyes sparkled with curiosity, but she said nothing.
A moment later, the words came, thoughtful. "You sure about that? I could use some help around my place. Maybe she'd be better off with me, helping out around the house."
And at the mere suggestion, a spark of irritation had flared to life. The memory of Lena's vulnerability, the softness of her skin, the way she had trembled-it was all too fresh, too intoxicating. I wasn't ready to let her go.
"I'll let you have her for a while," I conceded, though reluctance laced my words. "But when I want her back, she'll return to me.
Sophia's smile broadened, the glint of amusement dancing in her gaze. "Fair enough," she replied, rising fluidly from the bed. "But don't expect me to keep her indefinitely.
She strode towards Lena, her grasp firm as she clutched the girl's arm, hauling her in the direction of the door. Just as they had almost reached the doorway, an impulse swept me to my feet. I closed the space separating us in a second, my figure towering over Lena. She froze. In her eyes, wide with fear, a dawning realization of her predicament shone bright.
I hunched over, making my voice very low and threatening. "Remember this: now you're mine."
A quiver traversed her body-a dumb acknowledgment of the authority that was presently bestowed upon me. Before she could utter a word, Sophia pulled her through the doorway, leaving me there with a whirlwind of conflicted emotions.
The moment the door shut behind them, I sagged back onto the bed, frustration and desire battling inside me. Lena was a mystery, one challenge I was far from being ready to let go of.
Yet, this nagging intuition told me it was going to be a route riddled with complications. In this game full of twists and turns, I was determined not to lose my control.
