Flora
It felt like dé ja-vu.
My head banged as I cracked my eyes open. A low lit chandelier stared down at me. Pain ran throughout my body.
I’ve been here, I have seen this before. I rose gently, careful not to strain any muscle and propped myself up with my elbows.
I looked at the foot of the bed. A lady sat on a couch, her head tipped back in a deep sleep.
I slowly peeled the duvet off my body. Since it wasn’t a man in the room, there was a chance those other freaks wouldn’t be waiting outside either.
My legs were numb when they met the floor. I looked down at them, they were swollen but I couldn’t feel them.
Pain ricocheted through my body. I bit down on my teeth and tiptoed to the door. I turned the knob, it wasn’t locked.
Carefully, I opened the door and slipped out.
The house was quiet. The rooms around me were locked and looked like something that hadn't been opened for a while. A long spiral staircase stared back at me. I immediately made my way down the stairs.
Theron was in the living room. A glass of whiskey in hand.
He was spread out on his couch like the villain he was. His black shirt -like his heart- was folded to his elbows. His muscles flexed as he took a sip of his drink.
My stomach swelled in anger. How could he be comfortably relaxed after kidnapping a person.
A scoff rippled through my throat. I let it out and marched up to him.
“What did you do to me?” His eyebrows sprang up to his forehead. That was the only reaction he gave.
“Flora.” He slowly set the glass down on the coffee table. “You are finally awake.”
“What did you do to me? Why did I pass out when I tried to leave this place? Are you trying to hold me captive?”
His phone buzzed beside him and lit up with a message. He picked it up and glanced at the message before clicking off the screen.
“You remembered. You have been passed out for days I feared you wouldn’t remember.”
My stomach churned wickedly. My chest tightened. The confidence I had marching up to him shook.
I have been passed out for days?
“What- what… How long was I passed out?”
Theron placed his phone next to his drink and locked his fingers together then stared at me with all seriousness, as if whatever he had to say would either make or break me.
“Five days. Roughly.”
I staggered backwards and managed to catch myself before I fell. I guess what he said did break me.
“It’s not possible. It couldn’t have been five days. You have been holding me hostage for five days!”
“It wasn’t me.”
I waited for him to say more. To give me some f****d up explanation as to how I couldn’t leave the house but he kept mute and kept his eyes on me. His face was written with a false innocence.
I nodded rigorously, my mind running a hundred miles per hour.
I have been here for five days. I couldn’t leave the house alone but I could leave with someone. Someone who wouldn’t dare leave me with this monster.
I slowly turned my eyes away from and shifted it to the phone on the table. As if on cue, it buzzed again and lit up.
I followed Theron’s hand as it reached for the phone. Just as he was about taking it, I dove quickly and snatched the phone from the table.
“What the hell?” His voice did not match the anger his words expressed. “Give it back, Flora.”
“Sure. After the police arrive.” Without waiting any longer, I clicked on ‘emergency call’ and dialed the emergency number.
“Mr. Torin Langston,” a male voice came on the other end after the second ring. “How can we help you today? Do you need us to send our men? Is it an emergency?”
My heart dropped to my stomach as my lungs contracted and refused to expand.
How did they know it was Theron calling? He had the police on speed dial. They couldn’t save me.
“Hello, Mr. Langston? Mr. Langston? Mr. Lang-” I ended the call.
“You did this.” Tears burned my eyes as they gathered immediately. My heart pounded against my chest, my stomach churning with regret.
I shouldn’t have tried to run.
I should have listened to Dad; there were monsters out there and I have been captured by one.
I shouldn’t have tried to run.
“You turned the police against me.”
“This was not premeditated, Flora, believe me. Give me back my phone now, please.”
“Why are you doing this? Is this about what you said at the restaurant? Having my head for the ritual, is that what you want to do?”
He reached for his phone but I took a step back. He tried to stand up but dropped back into his seat immediately, a small wince escaping his lips.
Was he hurt like I was? I thought.
“Just give me back my phone.”
“You want to kill me. That’s why you’re keeping me hostage.”
Huffing, he pressed his fists into the couch and pushed himself up. I took large steps backwards expecting him to come for his phone, instead, he sidestepped me and started for the door.
The heels of his shoes clicked against the tiled floor in sharp hurried footsteps. I chased after him.
He walked down the long hallway and came out in a large balcony.
The balcony overlooked the whole area. Far ahead, the sunset glowed against the darkening clouds.
Theron didn’t stop to admire the sunset which meant I didn’t stop to admire the sunset.
Theron walked to the rail, lined his waist against it and looked down. I mirrored him -only my stomach was against the railing- and looked down.
My eyes landed on my car.
My car that gave up on me on the way and refused to start. The same car I left kilometers away from the woods.
How did he find it? How did he know the car belonged to me?
“How?” The question left my lips in a whisper. It was the only thing my brain could come up with.
“You were running away. You wanted somewhere away from your father and… Jake,” He said the name with a lot more spite than I had. Like he had a personal issue with Jake.
“I figure you would want a piece of your old life while building your new one, hence the car.”
I felt his gaze burn into the side of my face but I was too surprised to care.
These men that took me. This man next to me, he was a monster. They were all monsters.
The restaurant.
My car incident
The woods
The ritual
The police.
This was all planned. It was premeditated and I have fallen victim to it.
Dad was right. I should have listened to him.
Just as I took it, Theron reached out and snatched the phone off my grip. I had let my guard down.
“Your bag is in the trunk. Welcome home, Hybrid.”
