TRANSFORMATION

TORIN “This isn’t working.” I slammed the mug in my hand against the wooden table. The mug shook as it tried to find a balance and a thick black liquid spilled out. I had been in this room for four hours -after ‘welcoming’ Flora- waiting and anticipating what we knew there was not a cure for. It was getting darker with each passing second. My stomach twisted in knots, night was coming, a deadly night was ahead. “You don’t know that for sure.” Yarrow took the mug and tipped up the content. The potion he always brewed was meant to be a stress reliever but I had started to believe it was doing quite the opposite. Sweat lined my forehead and heat began turning in my chest. My heart felt tight, like a hard hand was squeezing it out. I looked up at Yarrow, his eyes were narrowed curiously at me, like he was waiting for me to act so he would strike. “You should leave.” I said through gritted teeth. I jerked from the bed and started pacing the room. “This isn’t the time for you to be stubborn, Yarrow, I could kill you.” I walked back to the dressing table, picked up the mug and downed the liquid in one go. The bitter liquid burned the back of my throat. I squeezed my eyes and welcomed the burn. For a second, it was better than the burn sitting in my chest. Yarrow shook his head, “I should be here in case something happens.” A sharp pain cut through my chest. I staggered quickly and fell onto my bed, only stopping myself with my palms. “Have you forgotten what happened the last time? Leave now, Yarrow!” I felt the beads of sweat across my forehead. My head turned dizzy for a second, I pressed my eyes shut and shook my head. Red… The clear vision I had was blurred out and it felt as though I was looking through a red prism. Yarrow made to take a step closer. I ran back on the bed, almost rolling over. “By the goddess’s name, I swear, Yarrow; if I kill you here, I promise I will murder you in your sleep.” I couldn’t recognize the sound of my own voice. It was deep and low and harsh and not the usual way I would have sounded. “Torin-” “Arrghh!” The snapping of my spine echoed through the room. I felt the pains deep in my core. Red… Blood… Pain… Anger… My vision disappeared completely, my heart pounding a billion beats per second. My body felt heavy with my head lighter than every other part. I looked down at my hands; they were shaking profusely with need, a strong urge to kill. My claws, sharp and pointed, waiting for the meat to devour. A growl tore from my throat. Another more visceral pain ripped through my body vibrating in my ribs. Nothing else belonged to me, not my body, not my voice and certainly not my eyes. “Arrggh!” My claws dug into the mattress as I hunched over, fighting for breath. Every muscle in my body screamed for help and relief. A muffled scream came from my side, I whipped my head to the direction it came from and through my red prism, my eyes met the meat. His purple eyes cut to mine immediately. I growled as I leapt up from the bed. In one sharp swift movement, the sound of the door hinges tore through the room. My eyes followed my meat as I dashed across the room. I jumped at him, my claws stretching to dig into it. As I reached it, the meat slipped past the door and slammed it behind it. My claws dug into the wooden door. “Arrgghh!” The growl tore through my chest. My body was burning up. My head was hazy. I wanted the pressure on my chest to be lifted off me. “Alpha Torin, please have mercy.” Terrified screams. Those pleading eyes. Blood. Too much blood. My hands stretched to open the door, I forced myself backwards and I staggered onto the bed. Something cracked and broke. I couldn’t go outside. Not like that, not after everything that happened the last time. A growl rumbled in my chest. I fisted my palms. The pain of my claws digging into my flesh ran throughout my body but I refused to let go. I wouldn’t let it win, not again. Blood… The scent of my blood clung thick in the air. I wanted blood. I wanted lots of it. Then- Click. I heard the hinges creak as the door opened. For a brief second, the pain running through my body became nothing compared to the sound of the footsteps entering the room. I jerked up from the bed, my blood dripping to the floor. I rushed to the invader and finally let the growl in my chest out. This time, even I was terrified of how deathly my voice sounded. Plain white eyes stared back at me as I stood before my invader. Her dark locks cascaded against her side as she stretched her hand towards me. She tilted her head to the side as she cupped my face in one hand. Her white balls danced around my face. “Cursed one.” Her soft voice danced through my ears. Cold shivers ran down my spine. My spine straightened. The sweat on my forehead turned cold. My claws stood on alert to act. “Get out,” I growled. “This is not your time,”Her thumb brushed through the hair on my face. “This is not your time to leave us.” “I said; leave. Leave here! It is not your duty to decide!” My hands shot her, my claws aimed straight for her face. She caught my hand immediately before I could reach her and locked her fingers tightly around mine. “Let go!” I growled. Her hold tightened. “Torin.” I felt dizzy for a quick second. I shook my head, when I looked up, the red prism was gone. My vision was back. Flora stood in front of me, those plain white eyes still staring back at me. She moved closer. I took a step back. My vision may have been back but I was still transforming, the moon was out and the night wasn’t anywhere over. “What the f**k are you doing, Flora?” She moved closer, ignoring the fact that I sounded and looked like death. Instead, she wrapped herself around me, a low vibration erupting from her chest. I froze. I couldn’t understand what was happening. The beast in me surged. I pushed against her shoulder but she kept herself tight around me. The vibration became louder and stronger and thicker. My blood sizzled. My chest expanded in relief but the beast kept clawing for an out. My claws retracted one by one. Her scent, her warmth, her voice wrapped around my senses. “Keep humming, louder.” I gruffed out. I knew that song but I couldn’t remember where I heard. She kept humming. “Where did you learn that song and why are you singing it now?” She looked up at me, her blue eyes clashing against mine. She shrugged. “I don’t know.”
