Leah barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she replayed the call in her mind, dissecting every word, every second of silence.
By morning, she had made a decision—she wasn’t going to wait for trouble to find her. She was going to find it first.
At the Office
When she arrived, Erin was already waiting for her.
“I found something,” Erin said, handing Leah a report. “Nico’s international deal? It’s risky. The company he’s partnering with has a history of—”
A sharp knock on the door interrupted them.
Leah looked up to find Nico.
His expression was unreadable, but she could see it in his eyes—he knew something.
“Erin, give us a moment,” Leah said.
Erin hesitated but nodded, slipping out.
As soon as the door closed, Leah crossed her arms. “You don’t usually show up unannounced. What is it?”
Nico leaned against the desk, watching her. “I did some digging about your call last night.”
Her pulse quickened, but she kept her face neutral. “And?”
He exhaled. “Whoever called you—they’re not just some random threat. This is bigger than business, Leah.”
She stiffened. “I don’t need you to protect me.”
“I’m not offering,” he said smoothly. “I’m warning you. If you’re not careful, this could cost you more than just a deal.”
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Then, Nico took a step closer. His voice was lower now, more serious. “You’re not the only one with secrets.”
Leah held his gaze, refusing to let him see the flicker of doubt inside her. Was this about him, or was this about her past catching up?
Either way, she had no choice but to play this game carefully.
Because one wrong move, and everything she had built could come crashing down.
