Leah sat in her office, staring at the contract in front of her. The partnership with Alvarez Tech was official, and that meant one thing—she would have to work closely with Nico Alvarez for the next several months.
She exhaled sharply, leaning back in her chair. She had spent years building her reputation, making sure emotions never interfered with business. But Nico… he was the one person who had always managed to shake that control.
A soft knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. Before she could respond, the door opened, and Vanessa Cruz, her best friend and business partner, strode in.
“You look like you’re about to punch someone,” Vanessa teased, dropping into the chair across from her.
Leah shot her a glare. “I just signed a deal with the devil.”
Vanessa smirked. “More like the devilishly handsome CEO who still gets under your skin.”
Leah rolled her eyes. “It’s business. Strictly business.”
Vanessa leaned in, resting her chin on her palm. “Right. And how long before ‘strictly business’ turns into late-night meetings and unresolved tension?”
Leah opened her mouth to argue, but before she could, her phone buzzed. Nico’s name flashed on the screen. She hesitated for a second before answering.
“Leah,” Nico’s voice was smooth, controlled. “We need to finalize the project timeline. I’ll send my team over to your office this afternoon.”
Leah tightened her grip on the phone. “Fine. I’ll clear my schedule.”
A short pause. Then, in a lower voice, Nico added, “Looking forward to working with you again.”
The call ended before she could respond. Leah set her phone down, ignoring the way her pulse had quickened.
Vanessa grinned. “Strictly business, huh?”
Leah exhaled. “Shut up.”
