I lift my nose to the air and search for the source of the scent. It is, for lack of better words... stimulating. My wolf forces me to follow, although my human form is telling me to be cautious. I've never been this entranced before with anyone's scent. Then I see him.
A huge black wolf with piercing, icy blue eyes. Staring right back at me. He obviously caught my scent too. We were drawn to each other. I knew every one in wolf form and human in my Harvest Moon Pack and most of the local ones, but he was one I had never senses before. The intensity of his gaze drew me closer and her edged towards me as well. The nearer I came the more his size became evident, I have never seen such a huge wolf, he must have been a lycan, most male weres were large, but not like this. I was a fraction of his size, if he had wanted to, his massive jaws could have clamped around my throat, clenched down and that would be the end of me. He must have been a lycan.
But I trusted my wolf. She has never let me down before. Then without warning, he wagged his tail and took a huge paw, tousled leaves in my direction. Oh, he wanted to play.
I hadn't played in wolf form in years. He lowered his front half to the ground with his rear in the air asking me to chase him, and before I knew it, we were off. Bumping into each other, nipping at each other, zigzagging through the trees, sliding through the leaves.
My heart was beating faster and faster, we started nipping at each other as we began to bump into one another, playfully until we ran to the great lake that was at the center of the country. We must have been running for miles. The great black wolf sat by the edge of the water looking across the lake towards the Lycan territory. I wanted to join him but it was painful to think about. To know I would be going there in just a few days, leaving my pack behind to become a servant. Losing my independence any way I looked at it. I couldn't stand it.
He must have sensed my hesitancy and turned to look at me, curiously. This must be where he took all his she-wolves. Where he mated with them, I thought. Just another bachelor getting his kicks. I have never mated. Never been marked. And by the way things seem at the moment, unless Demetrius wed me, I would never find my mate.
I whimpered. My wolf did not want to leave this wolf's side. I had fun with him, maybe the last bit of fun I'd have for the rest of my life. The great black wolf, still looking at me pensively into my ocean blue eyes. He must have the gift of mind reading. And he must be wondering why he can't read mine. Everyone always does.
He seemed to relent at being unable to know what I was thinking, walked over and nestled the top of his head onto mine.
I felt my core burst with heat and excitement at his touch. I had slightly when we were running through the woods, but now that we were standing still it was magnified. Pure carnal desire. I wanted him. My wolf wanted him. I couldn't ignore it. I could hear his heavy breath as it matched mine. The feeling inside me intensified but I forced my wolf to pull away.
He looked at me confusingly, but nodded, as though to say "you can go."
And go I did.
I ran the miles back to where I had left my clothes, it seemed to take much longer than it did when we left then playfully romping through the woods. I shifted back, got dressed and slowly walked back to the Pack House. I tried to push the thoughts of the lake and the Lycan far from my mind, but the moment seemed to be on replay. Right before I walked up the steps to the front door a thought crossed my mind...what if that had been my Luna chosen mate?
The thought made my whole body quiver. I wanted to turn around and run back to that spot, change into human form and know. It wasn't often that Lycan and Werewolves were bonded but it wasn't unheard of either. And I have never found someone whose scent forced my wolf to follow. I shake myself out of it and head up the stairs.
But...what if?
