Leaning against the bulwarks of the Sunrise, Captain Scott watched the dying sun slowly sink into the Mediterranean Sea. Every shade and hue of red, from the most intense violet to the palest pink, colored the landscape before him. The frenzy that had reigned on the Sunrise all afternoon was slowly giving way to the apparent calm that always settled on deck just before the anchor was raised. He couldn’t wait to leave Gibraltar, so he wouldn’t have to see the fortress anymore, and would be able to put the last weeks behind him. The most beautiful weeks of my life, he reflected.
