"Where did you find this?" Ruth asked.
"In my father's study" Kenneth replied.
Her eyebrows scrunched together.
"Your father's study?"
He nodded, avoiding her gaze. She looked at the pictures more closely this time. The newspaper cutouts were of an accident, dated back ten years.
TERRIBLE ACCIDENT BEFALLS THE
JUDE FAMILY
Yesterday morning, the body of Celeste Jude, Daughter of Oscar Jude, a celebrated scientist and founder of the Jude university was discovered on the grounds of the mansion, by their gardener. It is said that Celeste Jude committed suicide, but further investigation showed that she was murdered. For further details (go to page 44)
Ruth sat their, her eyebrows knitted together, murmuring to herself. Kenneth observed the contents of the folder lazily.
After a while he said
"So...... this proves that the girl you see murdered in your dream actually exists"
She looked at him, biting her lips
"I'm still not sure" she said slowly "I mean..... I don't know" her voice trailed off.
He gave an exasperated sigh.
"What's up with you. First you wanted us to believe that your dreams meant something. And now that you know that they do have a connection to reality. You don't want them to be true."
"It's not that......... It's just" she drew a deep breath. "Well first off this case does not go with my dream. Here it says that she fell from the top of a tower-"
"But it also says that she may have been murdered" Kenneth interjected lazily.
"In that case someone pushed her from the top of the tower. Whereas in my dreams she was in room, a dimly lit room, not outside."
"The murderer killed her in a room and then threw her out of the window to make it look like a suicide."
"That's far fetched" Ruth said, agitated. Kenneth started laughing.
"We're having this conversation on basis of a nightmare. Believe me, nothing's far fetched." He said bemused.
"If she was murdered before the fall. The doctors would have known."
"They didn't perform an autopsy."
"You don't have proof of that"
"Neither do you"
Ruth pursed her lips and a few moments passed in silence, as they sipped their coffee. Ruth tried to organize her thoughts.
"You said you found them in you father's study." She said changing the subject.
He nodded.
"Why would he have them?" She asked curiously.
He raised his shoulders.
"Can I have them for a day?" Ruth said putting the contents of the folder back.
"Sure" he said getting up.
"Where are you going?" She said before she could stop herself.
"You'll have to pay for this gracious favour, you know" smiling to himself he went out.
She sat there, her lips parted in disbelief. They had been together for almost four years, yet she still couldn't get used to his ways, much less understand them.
She sat in front of the mirror, trying to hide the dark circles. But in vain. She had been up all night organizing her dreams and the folder contents methodically. She gave up after a while. She saw her reflection as she swung her bag on her shoulder.
The dark circles stood out under the startlingly green eyes. Her black curls were tied in a lose ponytail. She wore a full sleeve black shirt with short plaid trousers and knee boats.
Kenneth joined her as she entered the corridor. She didn't acknowledge his presence as they walked on. He didn't start a conversation himself, but silently kept on walking with her.
Ruth saw Edith coming out of a classroom as they turned a corner. As Edith's eyes fell on Kenneth, a frown appeared on her face, her pale blue eyes flared up at once.
"Hello" Kenneth grinned down at her.
"Can I talk to you for a sec" Edith said, her eyes fixed on Ruth.
"Sure"
"I can't believe you believed everything he said" They were sitting under the shade of a willow tree in the university grounds. Ruth had showed and told Edith everything that happened on the previous night.
"I have no reason to not believe him" Ruth said patiently, and as an afterthought she added.
"And don't forget you're the one who told him about my dreams against my life."
Edith sighed but didn't answer back, changing the subject, she said
"What about the transfer students..... Is anyone arriving today?"
"Uh.... yeah a couple of them" she said, not paying attention.
"Look I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel bad. But it's just......... I don't completely trust him and I know" she went on a little louder, as Ruth tried to interrupt. "I was the one who involves him but I want you to be careful... You know sometimes..... He can act a little reckless"
She nodded but didn't say anything.
After a while they departed to their separate lectures.
Ruth had a half day today, so she left the building early, as she was descended the stairs, her phone rang.
"Hello" she said picking up her phone.
"Your opportunity came early. Time to pay for the favour".
