CHAPTER 4

As the full moon rose majestically above Silver Hollow, the evening air was charged with expectancy. Pack members crowded the ceremonial grounds, their looks a mix of exhilaration and discomfort. This was the evening the Blackwood Pack and the Crowe Pack were expected to confirm their alliance—a union guaranteed to bring wealth and authority. But under the surface darkness thrived. Standing at the brink of the assembly, I gripped hard the proof of Marcus and Selena's betrayal. My heart hammered in my chest as I looked about for Ryan in the throng. Though it was risky, our strategy was our only one shot to reveal the truth and prevent the partnership from ever materializing. The ceremonial fire flared in the middle of the clearing, creating spooky shadows on the faces of the people assembling. Marcus was tall next to Selena, his attitude arrogant and assured. Clearly indicating the wicked magic Selena possessed, her eyes shone with a terrible brightness. My eyes fixed on Ryan from across the throng, and he nodded slightly to indicate he was ready. Marcus and Selena started the wedding reading old vows of oneness. The air was charged with dishonesty, every word they spoke tinged. I inhaled deeply then moved forward, my voice loud and clear. "Stop these ceremonies!" Shock spread through the throng, everyone looked at me. Marcus's arrogant attitude wavered, then gave way to a snarl of rage. Elena Moon, you belong nowhere here! With a steady voice, I held up the pile of papers. "I evidence your betrayal, Marcus Blackwood. Using black magic and dishonesty to take over, you and Selena have plotted against your own packs. The assembly murmured a disinterested disbelief. Marcus's eyes glowed with rage, and Selena's face grew chilly. "Lies," Selena screamed. You are simply a meddlesome interloper. I moved toward the fire, the papers held aloft for everyone to see. "These docs expose everything. The agreements you kept under wraps, the life you wrecked, the murder you planned to silence me. As the pack members started to whisper among themselves, there was obvious conflict. Ryan advanced, his words bearing the weight of authority. She is speaking the truth here. Marcus, Selena, your deeds have cast Silver Hollow only in darkness. Marcus yelled in fury, his body changing to get ready for an attack. But Selena waved her hands, her dark magic flickering in the air before he could get moving. "You will all pay for this betrayal!” Chaos burst as Selena's power shot toward us. I erected a defense barrier, but her strike was too strong. Ryan changed into his wolf form and jumped to my side as we faced the assault side-wise. Distinct from their allegiance to Marcus, the pack members were caught between their fear of Selena's might and As Selena yelled an incantation, calling black energy to her help, her eyes radiated an unusual brightness. The ground shook, and shadows appeared to move about her like a storm. I concentrated my energy, guiding the Moon Goddess inside me. Though my barrier grew stronger, Selena's power was unrelenting. Ryan surged at Selena, his strong form a blur of action. Their growls and snarls filled the air as they collided with a force that rocked the ground. Turning to Marcus, who had changed into his wolf form and was racing toward me, I launched a surge of force that drove Marcus back. His eyes full of hate, he snarled. Eva, you ought to have stayed dead. "I'm not Eva anymore," I said, my voice firm. Elena Moon here will see justice done. Our fight was hard; the air buzzed with the force of our collision. Marcus was strong; his attacks motivated by resentment, but I was resolved. Using everything I had, my motions guided by the intuition of the Moon Goddess. The fight of Ryan and Selena continued, their powers meeting in flashes of shadow and light. Selena had great charm, but Ryan battled with a desperation derived from love and allegiance. He would object to her triumph. I spotted a hole as the struggle went on. I launched Marcus back with great power, knocking him to the ground. I stood over him, driven by nothing but gaze. " This ends now." Marcus hissed, trying to stand, but I kept him down with my might. "You'll regret this, Elena." "No," I responded, my voice strong. You'll. I bound Marcus with a spell, rendering him helpless with a last surge of vitality. Having seen in stunned silence, the pack members started forward, their allegiance changing as they came to know the truth. I turned to find Ryan over Selena, his human shape once more. She lay on the ground, her dark power fading as her eyes darkened with loss. "It's over, Selena," Ryan remarked, his voice resolutely strong. Selena's eyes flew to me, her face one of pure hate. "This is not the last, Elena. You are never going to be safe. I moved forward, fixed on nothing. "We'll be poised for whatever comes next." I started to feel relief as the pack mates assembled around. Marcus and Selena's rule of fear was ending; the truth was out. Still, I understood this was only the starting point. Still to discover were secrets, and Silver Hollow's future remained unknown. Ryan moved to my side, his hand finding mine. "We did it," he remarked, his voice tinged with both weariness and hope. I nodded and pressed his hand. We did indeed. I was at peace as the full moon illuminated us. Though it would be difficult, the road ahead suited me. Ryan at my side and the pack's backing would help us to confront whatever lay ahead, together driven in our quest of justice and peace. The noises of festivity permeated the evening as the pack members relished their acquired freedom. But among the happiness, I couldn't get rid of the sense that this was only the beginning. The past still loomed large, and the road ahead was dangerous. For now, though, I let myself taste the triumph, relish Ryan's company and the hope for a better future. Ready to defend Silver Hollow and the ties that bound us, united we would confront whatever was ahead.
