Chapter 15
I Came to Talk
Amara's POV
I stood at the door, watching as Sisi stepped inside, her bright smile plastered on her face, like she had somehow been transformed overnight. She was acting like a completely different person, and I wasn’t buying it. Not even for a second.
“Sisi?” My voice was cautious, laced with suspicion. “What’s all this about?”
She stepped into the penthouse, gliding past me with an air of confidence. “I came to talk,” she said, her tone light and breezy. “I figured it’s time we put all this nonsense behind us.”
I raised an eyebrow, my mind immediately going on high alert. Nonsense? I wasn’t sure what she was referring to, but I had a feeling I knew where this was headed. “What nonsense?”
“The fighting,” she said, her words soft and apologetic. “I’ve been so petty, Amara. I let my jealousy get the best of me. I know I’ve said things I shouldn’t have, but I don’t want to keep fighting anymore. I want to make things right between us.”
I folded my arms, eyeing her carefully. “You want to make things right? Just like that?”
She looked at me, her eyes wide with sincerity...at least, that’s what it seemed like on the surface. “Yes. I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and honestly, I don’t want to keep holding onto all this anger. You’re my sister, Amara. Family. And I want to try to be there for you, no matter how hard this whole situation with Damian is.”
I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or roll my eyes. Sisi was the last person I ever thought would offer an olive branch. She’d always been so competitive, so determined to outshine me in every way. And now, suddenly, she was acting like a saint.
I knew better than to trust her words, but I also knew that I couldn’t shut her out completely. If there was one thing I’d learned in all the years of dealing with Sisi, it was this: keep your enemies close. Watch their every move. And if you let your guard down, they’ll take advantage of you.
“I’m listening,” I said slowly, my arms still crossed over my chest. “But I’m not buying all this ‘sisterhood’ talk right away. You don’t just change overnight, Sisi.”
A hint of something crossed her face...surprise, maybe? But she quickly masked it with a smile. “I know I don’t deserve your trust. I’ve messed up, and I understand why you’re skeptical. But I really do want to try, Amara.”
I watched her closely. Her words sounded so rehearsed, like she had been practicing them in front of a mirror. But even so, I wasn’t completely convinced yet. I had to give her credit for being creative. She knew exactly what to say to make me let my guard down.
“I’m not sure what game you’re playing, Sisi,” I said carefully, “but I’ll play along for now. Just know I won’t let you mess things up for me again.”
Her smile widened, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I would never try to mess things up for you, Amara. I just want to be there for you.”
I could tell she was trying to convince both herself and me, but I wasn’t ready to buy into this act. I had to keep an eye on her, watch her movements, and see if she was genuinely changing or if this was just another one of her schemes. I couldn’t afford to be caught off guard again.
“I’m not sure about this,” I muttered, shaking my head. “But I’ll keep you close, so I can see what you’re really up to.”
She tilted her head, a hint of amusement in her expression, but I saw through it. “You won’t regret it, I promise.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle softly to myself as I closed the door behind her. “We’ll see about that.”
Later that evening, I sat on the couch, my thoughts spinning. Sisi’s sudden change in demeanor had surprised me more than I cared to admit. I kept playing over our conversation in my head, trying to figure out if she was genuinely sincere or if this was all just another one of her manipulative moves.
I had to be smart about this. I couldn’t let my guard down, not with her. She’d done enough damage in the past, and I wasn’t about to let her destroy everything I had worked for. Especially now, with my future with Damian uncertain and the baby on the way, I had to stay focused.
But there was one thing I was sure of...Sisi wasn’t going to get away with anything this time. I would keep her close, monitor every little move she made, and make sure she didn’t outsmart me again.
I wouldn’t let her win. Not now, not ever.
The next few days passed in a quick blur, with Sisi doing everything she could to act like the perfect sister. She’d show up unannounced, offering help with the baby preparations or bringing over dinner, all smiles and sweetness. But I could see through it. I could see the hint of something darker in her eyes, something calculating.
And I wasn’t going to let it get to me. I would continue to keep an eye on her, and strike at the right time.
Every time she came around, I made sure to keep my distance, keeping our conversations surface-level. I didn’t trust her, not one bit. But I had to admit, she was playing the role of the concerned sister well. Too well.
But I wasn’t fooled. I would keep her close and figure out what she was really up to. The best way to control the situation was to stay one step ahead of her, and that’s exactly what I was going to do.
Later that night, I found myself sitting by the window, staring out at the city lights. The weight of everything pressing down on me was suffocating. Damian was still distant, still cold at times, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was keeping something from me. The pregnancy, the relationship...it was all so complicated, and I didn’t have all the answers yet.
But one thing I did know for sure: I couldn’t let Sisi win. Whatever her plans were, I’d stop her before she had the chance to ruin everything I was building for myself and my baby.
