CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3 The gate opened. Will someone finally come out? Ever since my parents and I moved to this area, I had passed this street almost every single school day. And not once— Not once— Had I ever seen anybody come out of that strange building. Would today be the first time? The house had two gates. One faced Mama Jaman's shop directly, while the second gate stood farther down the road opposite a bungalow. And the sound I heard? It came from the one opposite Mama Jaman's shop, which was close to where I stood. I wasn't that close to it, but my legs somehow moved faster on their own. My heartbeat suddenly quickened. My breathing became uneven. And strangely… I felt excited. Wait. Why am I even excited?! Maybe because this was the first time I was finally going to see someone come out of the mysterious house. But who would it be? A man? A woman? A boy? A girl? I promised myself I wouldn't stare too much though. Well… That promise lasted less than ten seconds. Because the moment I reached the second gate— Someone stepped out. A boy. A very cute boy. Ahn! Isabel, what is wrong with you?! You just saw him for the first time and you're already calling him cute? How shameless can you actually be? But honestly… It wasn't even me exaggerating. He really was handsome. Very handsome. The kind of handsome that makes you notice immediately even when you don't want to. He was tall — probably around six feet. Not muscular. Not skinny either. Just… balanced. His skin was caramel-toned, slightly fairer than mine, and there was something strangely intimidating about the aura around him. Like one of those dangerously beautiful people you admire from a distance because getting too close might ruin your life. A handsome devil. Like a rose — beautiful on the outside, but when you check inside, it's filled with sharp, pointing thorns. And his nose— God. His sharp nose somehow made his entire face look even better. Wait. He is also going to school? Only then did I properly notice what he was wearing. A school uniform. I was so lost in his fascinating features that I didn't even notice sooner. A light green short-sleeved shirt tucked neatly into dark green shorts. Long white socks stretched to his knees with the edges folded slightly downward. Simple. Yet somehow, everything suited him perfectly. *"Hm?"* He suddenly turned his head in my direction. Shit. I looked away so fast my neck almost snapped. No way was I letting him catch me staring at him like some obsessed weirdo. So I immediately continued walking forward like absolutely nothing happened. Like I wasn't the one admiring him just a while ago. But my heartbeat wouldn't calm down. Did he notice? Oh God. What if he already realized I was staring at him? Wouldn't that be embarrassing? No, calm down Isa. You reacted quickly. There was no way he noticed. Right? I took a slow breath, trying to settle my racing heart as I increased my pace slightly. I absolutely refused to look back. But even without turning around, I could still feel it. His gaze. Cold. Sharp. Heavy. Like invisible needles pressing against my back. He wasn't moving. He was just standing there. Watching me. Why? I hadn't done anything. Right? And somehow, that only made me walk even faster. My movements became stiff and rigid, but I kept going without looking back once. My eyes stayed completely fixed on the small gate ahead — staring at it like it was my only means of survival from this handsome devil. That gate led to another street and also to my friend's house. Mercy. I always stopped by to pick her up before school, even though we didn't attend the same school. At this point, it had become part of my daily routine. Though honestly? Sometimes that girl delayed me so much I nearly ended up late for school. But I never really minded. Mercy was a genuinely good friend. And to be sincere— She deserved every bit of love in the world. Wait. … I think he has started moving. ---
