Life in the orphanage home is not that pleasant when compared to the life of children living with their parents. Children in the orphanage depend on the alms and generosity from the public and well to-do individuals in the society in order to survive. Despite all odds, Chetam was doing well in the orphanage home. As his name implies, it had been favour from one corner to the other since the arrival of Chetam in the home. They had been receiving gifts of all kinds such as food items, clothing, cash and other goodies unlike they used to before. Maami strongly believed that it was the presence of Chetam that attracted this luck to the home.
As days passed into weeks, weeks into months, Chetam was growing up into a handsome boy and everyone in the orphanage was very fond of him. He didn’t give problems or cry unnecessarily like other children.
Maami took special care of Chetam in the orphanage home as if he was her biological child. Chetam on his own part, seems to act as if he knew it was Maami that brought him to the orphanage home and he calls him Mama. Two of them were inseparable in the home. Anywhere you see Maami, Chetam was sure to be there.
As years passed on, people were coming to the orphanage to adopt children. Many of the children in the orphanage were adopted. The presence of Maami in the home made it difficult for the management to release Chetam for adoption. The reason was that they understood the bond between him and Maami. It would break her heart if Chetam is given out for adoption because she loved him so dearly.
After about thirteen years in the orphanage, Chetam grew up to be a strong and self determined boy with a very bright future. He is a very intelligent boy, both in his academic work and otherwise. He always tells Maami anytime they are together how he would strive to succeed in life in order to take care of her. He dreams are to make it big in life. All this his dreams and desires were cut short when the owner of the orphanage died. It was a very sad moment for the orphanage. It became so difficult to maintain the home after the demise of the owner. During this period, the orphanage experienced hardship as donations and gifts from individuals and governments were not coming in as it used to be.
After a while, the orphanage was closed down and everybody left the place.
