Chapter 1

Chapter 1 I carried the freshly brewed herbal soup for my mother-in-law, walking briskly into her room. For five years, her medicine had never ceased. When I married into this family, her wolf soul was damaged, and she was confined to bed. The Pack Doctor had said she wouldn’t live past a year. While pregnant, I spent my dowry and savings to hire the finest Healer and search for rare herbs, just to bring her back from the brink of death. Just as I reached the door, I heard a low conversation inside. It was my mother-in-law’s voice. “Evelyn has waited for you all these years, yet you faked your death, refused to acknowledge her, and got involved with another woman. Isn’t that too cruel to her?” My heart skipped a beat. The tray in my hands almost slipped. What was she talking about? After a long pause, a strangely familiar voice finally spoke. “Serena’s mate was my best brother. He died protecting me on the battlefield. I couldn’t turn my back on his wife and child.” That voice was unmistakably my Alpha, Aaron! My wolf soul screamed within me, pounding against the walls of my sanity. “I promise, once Serena’s child turns ten, I’ll resume my Alpha identity and reunite with Evelyn as her mate.” In that instant, everything I believed in shattered. I clutched the doorframe to keep from collapsing. Inside, the conversation continued. “But from the look of Serena’s belly, it seems she’s pregnant again? Did you two…” My mother-in-law’s voice held suspicion. Alpha Aaron coughed lightly, his tone guilty. “That night was my comrade’s death anniversary. We drank too much. Serena cried in my arms… I lost control, and then…” I couldn’t listen anymore. Tears fell silently, like a broken string of pearls. Aaron and I were fated mates, chosen by the Moon Goddess. We had grown up together, childhood sweethearts bound by a deep and lasting love. The night before he left, he left a permanent mark on my neck. His hot breath in my ear as he swore to love me for a lifetime. He said, “Evelyn, my Luna, take care of our pack and wait for me with our child.” For five years, I carved his words into my heart, gave my all to the pack, and dared not slack for a moment. And this was what I got in return? Just as my heart was about to shatter, my mother-in-law sighed heavily. “Poor Evelyn… She used to be the most dazzling jewel in our pack. So many wolves wanted her as their chosen mate, but she waited for you—her fated mate.” A glimmer of hope sparked in my heart. My mother-in-law was on my side. She would stand up for me. But the next words plunged me into an abyss. “I’m fated to be with Evelyn. Naturally, I won’t abandon her,” Aaron quickly interrupted. “There will only ever be one Luna in Silver Pack.” “Serena is just kept outside. Once her child grows up, I’ll send them to Crescent Bay. She won’t interfere with Evelyn and her child’s life.” My mother-in-law coughed, her voice soft. “Fine. Since Serena is carrying your pup, then so be it.” “I’ll help you keep this from Evelyn. But you must also be cautious. Don’t let anything slip!” My heart froze. The woman I treated like my own mother was going to help them lie to me just because Serena was pregnant? How could they do this to me? Grief and rage surged in my chest, nearly suffocating me. If I stayed another second, I would burst in and rip off their masks myself. Covering my mouth, I fled back to my house like a lost soul.
