I'm Still The Boss

The private elevator ride back to the penthouse was suffocatingly quiet. Christian stood in the center of the cab, staring straight ahead at the brass trim, his expression an unreadable mask of stone. I kept to the back corner, the heavy tablet tucked securely against my ribs, watching the subtle rise and fall of his broad shoulders. The moment the elevator doors hissed open into the dark, expansive living room, the atmosphere snapped. Before I could step past him toward the guest corridor, Christian turned, grabbed my wrist, and slammed me gently, but with absolute, immovable force, against the cool wood paneled wall beside the foyer. The tablet slipped from my fingers, clattering onto the thick rug below. My breath hitched sharply in my throat, my hyper-vigilance flaring into a white-hot spike. Every nerve ending screamed at me to fight, to throw an elbow, to scramble for an exit. But Christian didn't raise a hand to strike. He didn't lock his fingers around my throat the way Marcus used to when the liquor took hold. Instead, he stepped into my space, trapping me between the wall and his broad frame. The scent of rain, bitter gin, and high-grade leather rolled off him, heavy and intoxicating. "You saw everything tonight," Christian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly whisper that vibrated right through my chest. His grey eyes were inches from mine, pinning me in place with an intensity so raw it felt physical. "You sat in that room and watched me command men who murder for a living. You heard names, logistics, routes. You saw the baron, Elena." My pulse hammered wild and fast against my ribs, beating like a trapped bird right beneath the collar of my silk blouse. I forced myself to meet his gaze, refusing to let my chin drop. "I know who you are, Mr. Thorne." "Do you?" Christian leaned closer, his long fingers trailing up my left arm, sliding past the silver biometric band on my wrist until his palm settled firmly over the side of my neck. His thumb rested directly over my racing carotid artery, feeling the frantic, rapid rhythm of my heart. "Because in the light, you are my assistant. You handle my files, you schedule my calls, you wear the clothes I buy you. But down there? Down there, you hold secrets that could dismantle a multi-million-dollar operation and put me behind bars for the rest of my life." "I wouldn't betray you," I whispered, the words slipping out rough and dry. "I don't rely on 'wouldn't,' Elena," Christian growled softly, his thumb pressing just a fraction firmer against my skin, not enough to cut off my air, but enough to remind me of the terrifying power he held over my life. "Loyalty in my world isn't an assumption. It is an absolute requirement. If a single word of what you witnessed down there leaves your lips, if you so much as breathe a detail to Gary, to the police, or to anyone who crosses your path, I won't just turn you over to your father." He stepped closer, his body pressing against mine, pinning me flush against the wall. The dark, terrifying aura of the underworld king engulfed me completely. "I will personally ensure you vanish so completely that not even Marcus Vance could find your bones," Christian murmured, his eyes scanning my face, searching for any tremor of weakness, any sign of deceit. "Do you understand me?" The room felt entirely devoid of oxygen. I stared up into his cold, aristocratic face, looking at the man who held my freedom, my safety, and my life in his hands. A normal woman would have wept, begged, or pleaded for mercy. But I wasn't normal. I had survived a monster in a yellowing kitchen; I could survive the king in a golden cage. "I understand," I said, my voice steady, carrying a quiet, unshakeable strength that caught him off guard. "Your secrets are safe with me. Not because I fear you, Christian... but because I know what happens when you trust the wrong person. I don't break." Christian searched my eyes for three agonizing seconds. Slowly, the terrifying tension in his jaw relaxed. The cold, murderous edge in his gaze softened into something far more dangerous, a quiet, burning fascination that made my skin flush with sudden heat. He slid his hand from my neck down to my jawline, his fingers lingering against my skin for a heartbeat longer than necessary before releasing me. "Good girl," he whispered, his voice smooth as velvet once more. He stepped back, picking up the fallen tablet from the floor and placing it neatly into my hands. "Go to your room, Elena. Tomorrow, we have a long day."
