Chapter Ten: Shadows in the Snow

1711 Words
The storm outside raged, howling winds battering against the windows of the Blackwood estate. The fire in the library crackled and danced, casting flickering shadows on the walls, but Amelia felt no warmth from it. She sat on the couch, her knees drawn to her chest, staring blankly at the phone in her hands. The photo on her screen felt surreal—like something plucked straight from her nightmares. Her face, peaceful in sleep, caught in soft lighting that suggested the intruder had been no more than a few feet from her bed. She shivered, her skin crawling at the thought of someone being that close without her knowledge. “Amelia,” Adrian’s voice pulled her back to reality. He knelt before her, his hands warm and steady on hers. “Talk to me. What are you feeling right now?” “I don’t know,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I feel… violated. Exposed. How could this happen, Adrian? How could someone find this place?” His jaw clenched, the sharp angles of his face hardening. “This estate is supposed to be impenetrable. The only ones who know about it are family—and now you.” “And that’s exactly why this is so terrifying,” Amelia replied, her voice growing frantic. “If someone can breach the estate, what’s stopping them from getting in again? From…” She trailed off, unable to finish the thought. Adrian cupped her face gently, forcing her to meet his eyes. “We won’t let that happen. You’re safe here, Amelia. I swear it.” Before she could respond, the door burst open, and Jasper and Caleb strode in, snow clinging to their jackets. --- The Hunt for the Intruder “There’s no sign of them,” Caleb said, brushing off snow and pacing the room. His wolf was practically vibrating beneath his skin, angry and on edge. “Whoever it was, they’re good. They covered their tracks.” “They knew exactly what they were doing,” Jasper added, his expression dark. “No stray scents, no footprints leading back to the main road. Either they’re a ghost, or…” “Or they’ve been watching long enough to know how to avoid being detected,” Adrian finished, his voice sharp. Amelia sat silently, watching as the triplets spoke in low, urgent tones. She’d seen this side of them before—the calculating alphas who could strategize their way out of any crisis. But tonight, the stakes felt personal, and their worry seeped into the air like a thick fog. “What now?” she asked, her voice barely audible. Jasper turned to her, his face softening slightly. “We double the patrols. Lock down the estate. Nobody comes or goes without us knowing.” “That’s not enough,” Caleb snapped, his wolf snarling just beneath the surface. “We need to find whoever did this and end it. Before they try again.” “Recklessness won’t help us,” Adrian said calmly, though his voice carried the weight of authority. “We need a plan.” Amelia stood abruptly, the tension in her chest unbearable. “What about me?” she asked, her voice trembling. “What am I supposed to do? Just sit here and wait for whoever this is to make their next move?” “You don’t have to do anything,” Adrian said firmly. “We’ll handle this.” She shook her head, frustration bubbling to the surface. “That’s not good enough! Someone sent me this photo. They wanted me to know they were here. What if they’re trying to lure you out? What if this is just a distraction?” The room fell silent, her words hanging heavily in the air. “She’s not wrong,” Jasper admitted after a moment. “Whoever this is, they’re smart. If they can find the estate, they might already know our weaknesses.” Adrian’s gaze softened as he looked at her. “We’ll figure this out, Amelia. But for now, I need you to trust us.” --- A Sleepless Night The hours dragged on, and Amelia found herself back in her room, though sleep was the furthest thing from her mind. Every creak of the floorboards, every gust of wind against the windows, sent her heart racing. She glanced at the phone on her nightstand, and the eerie photo still etched in her mind. How had this person gotten so close? And why her? Her thoughts spiralled until she heard a soft knock at the door. “It’s me,” Adrian’s voice came through. She opened the door to find him standing there, his expression unreadable. “I thought you might want some company,” he said, holding up a blanket and a steaming mug of tea. She managed a small smile. “Thanks.” They sat together on the couch, the silence between them surprisingly comforting. “Do you think it’s him?” Amelia asked suddenly. Adrian didn’t need her to clarify. He knew exactly who she meant. “It’s possible,” he admitted, his voice low. “But if it is, he’s underestimated us. And that’s a mistake he won’t live to regret.” Amelia’s stomach churned at the thought of her ex being behind this. The idea of him invading her life again, bringing chaos and danger with him, was almost too much to bear. “Hey,” Adrian said gently, pulling her from her thoughts. “You’re not alone in this. Remember that.” She nodded, leaning against him as the weight of the night finally began to catch up with her. --- The Morning After When Amelia woke the next morning, the tension in the estate was palpable. Caleb and Jasper were already up, going over maps and security footage in the dining room. “Morning,” Caleb greeted her, though his tone was distracted. “Did you find anything?” she asked, her hope dwindling. “Not yet,” Jasper admitted. “But we did catch this.” He handed her a tablet, showing footage from one of the estate’s security cameras. Amelia’s breath caught in her throat. The figure on the screen was shrouded in darkness, their face obscured by a hood. But what struck her most was how close they’d gotten—to the house, to her. “They were here,” she whispered. “And they’ll be back,” Caleb said grimly. --- A Sinister Message Later that day, Amelia’s phone buzzed again. She hesitated before picking it up, dreading what she might find. The message was simple, but it sent chills down her spine: “I’m closer than you think.” Attached is another photo. This time, it showed the library window. From the outside. Her blood ran cold as she realized the implications. Whoever this was, they weren’t just watching her—they were toying with her. “Adrian!” she called out, her voice shaking. He was there in seconds, followed closely by Caleb and Jasper. “What is it?” Adrian asked, his eyes narrowing as he saw the message. Amelia handed him the phone, her hands trembling. His expression darkened as he read the message, his wolf pushing dangerously close to the surface. “This ends now,” he said, his voice a low growl. “We’re done playing defence,” Caleb added, his own wolf bristling. “It’s time to go on the offensive.” Amelia looked between them, a mixture of fear and determination bubbling inside her. Whoever this person was, they’d made a fatal mistake. They’d underestimated the Blackwoods. And, in doing so, they’d underestimated her too. Amelia had spent years rebuilding her life after her ex shattered her confidence, piecing together the fragments of her independence. She wasn’t the same woman who had allowed someone to dictate her happiness. Whoever this intruder was, they’d picked the wrong person to target. Her heart pounded, not from fear but from a growing resolve. She wasn’t going to hide in the shadows of the estate, waiting for the next shoe to drop. “I want to help,” she said firmly, surprising even herself. Adrian turned to her, his sharp eyes softening for a brief moment. “Amelia, this isn’t your fight. Let us handle it.” “But it is my fight,” she countered, her voice steady despite the tension in the room. “They came after me. They sent that message to me. I won’t just sit here waiting for them to strike again. I need to know what’s going on. I need to do something.” Jasper arched a brow, leaning casually against the wall, though the tension in his posture betrayed his calm demeanor. “You’re brave, sweetheart, I’ll give you that. But this isn’t a game. Whoever this is, they’re dangerous.” “I know that,” Amelia snapped, her sudden boldness surprising even herself. “But if they think they can scare me into running, they’re wrong. I’m not running. Not again.” Caleb let out a low whistle, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “She’s got fire. I like it.” “Enough,” Adrian said, though his tone lacked its usual sharpness. He turned back to Amelia, his gaze searching hers. “If you’re going to be involved, you follow our lead. No exceptions.” “I can do that,” she said without hesitation. “Good,” Adrian replied. “Because this ends here. Whoever they are, they’ll regret stepping onto Blackwood land.” Amelia nodded, determination blazing in her eyes. For the first time since receiving the photo, she felt something other than fear. She felt powerful. The Blackwoods might have been her protectors, but together, they were something else entirely—a force to be reckoned with. As the triplets began laying out their plan, Amelia listened intently, ready to play her part. The snowstorm outside raged on, but for the first time in a long time, Amelia felt a spark of hope flicker within her. This wasn’t just about survival anymore. It was about reclaiming her power, her life, and her future. And whoever was out there watching? They had no idea what was coming.
