Chapter 3

To say my dad was upset was an understatement. He was livid. I have never seen him so angry before. Sure, I've done things to get myself into trouble before, but never has he ever yelled at me like this. It was terrifying, and I couldn't stop the tears from rolling down my cheeks. "Do you even know how worried we were?" He yelled vehemently. "We called you dozens of times and you weren't answering, do you know what was running through our minds? How scared we were when we couldn't reach you?" he fumed. "Daddy I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you worry," I cried. "Where the hell were you? And don't you dare lie to us, or so help me Goddess, I will have your mom look through your memories." He growled. "I'm telling the truth! I was in the forest." I begged him to believe me. "Do you really expect me to believe that?" He snarled, making me bare my neck to him, taking both me and my mom by surprise. "If you were in the forest, you would have heard the bomb go off. Do you have any idea how hard it was for your mother and I? I can't link you, and your mom couldn't sense you. I thought the worst had happened when we couldn't reach you when we called!" "Daddy, I swear! I was in the forest! By the lake under the willow. I dozed off and didn't hear my phone ringing. I answered as soon as I woke up and saw Mom calling." I defended myself. "You expect me to believe that? There are no willows in the forest. Veronica! Check her memories!" "No, Daddy! Please. I'm telling the truth." I begged, but he didn't budge. I had never seen him this angry before. I knew he could be ruthless. It came with the job as the head general for the pack, but he has never shone this side to me before. "Mom, please! Please don't do this! I'll take you to where I was! I promise I'm not lying!" I cried, hoping she would listen to me. "Rey, that's enough. Look at her, she's not lying," my mom tried to defend me. "Veronica, she has lied to us about where she was going tonight, and could have put herself in danger! She lied about being able to jump for four years! What else has she been keeping from us?" he yelled. "Rey, take that tone with me one more time and I swear to the Father vampire you will regret it." She says, making him growl. She gives him a pointed stare and he backs off. "I will not invade our daughter's mind like that. And you are wrong to even suggest it!" She says sternly before looking back at me. "You will take us to where you were, because like your father said, there are no willows in the forest, on either side of the lake." I nodded my head before reaching my hands out for my parents to grab them. I closed my eyes and pictured the willow by the lake and jumped. When I opened my eyes, we were standing directly in front of the massive willow. It seemed different, like it grew within the last couple of hours, when I was last here. I turned around to see my dad, bending over, with a handful of dirt, sniffing it. No doubt he was trying to scent it to see if he could pick up my scent on it. Lucky for me, it was the spot I had fallen asleep on, and was likely covered in my scent. When he was satisfied, he got back up and came over to where I was standing with my mom. "We need to leave now. And you are not to come back here ever," my mom said in a quiet but stern tone. I turned to look at her but her gaze was fixed on something in the willow. I tried to follow her gaze, but in the blink of an eye, we were back in our living room. Mom was paler than normal and was out of breath as she tried and failed to grab her bag of blood from her corset. She looked sickly as she started to mumble some words I could not understand. Panic filled me as I watched my mom's eyes turn blood red and her panting increased. Without hesitation, my dad puts his wrist to her lips, and she bites into him. I could see the pain in his face as my mother fed on him. After a few minutes, her eyes finally began to turn back to the dark brown they usually were. Her breathing regulated and she finally released my dad from her mouth. With worry still all over her face, she checked my dad to make sure he was okay. He looked hurt, but he soon recovered thanks to his wolf, Theo. "How did you find that place?" My mom asked, still frantic. "I saw it in a dream. And then one day, I jumped there. It was my first time jumping," I said, a little worried from the look my mom was giving me. "You are to never go back again, do you understand me?" She said in the most serious tone she had ever used when speaking to me. "No wonder why I couldn't sense you. Do you know how far you were?" "I couldn't have been that far," I say, unsure of how far I am able to jump. "Marcy, you were on the other side of the world. In the forbidden woods," She said. "You cannot go there again." "Why not? I've been going for four years." I stated, making my mom look at me with a puzzled expression. "Baby, those are forbidden woods. Only generals are permitted entrance and even then, most don't make it out. It's not safe for you." "But mom-" "I said no. You are not to go there anymore. This is not up for discussion. I will bind you if I have to." My mom threatened and I felt my heart break. What is she not telling me? "You know, I'll be 18 soon and off to college. You can't control what I do for my whole life!" I yelled. "I will do whatever it takes to ensure your safety. That includes being the bad guy, grounding you and binding you! Don't make me be the bad guy, Marcy!" She yelled back at me. "Okay, it's been a long night. There's a few hours until daylight, so why don't we get some rest and then talk about this tomorrow?" Dad suggested. I rolled my eyes and stormed up to my room. I can't wait to leave this damn city and be on my own. *** Summer went by quickly and it was almost my birthday. I was one step closer to leaving. Things haven't really been the same since graduation. My parents were overbearing and found any excuse to call me and see where I was and what I was doing. They knew I didn't have any friends and that I spent most of my time at the library in the packhouse. Alpha Black hired me to organize and take care of the books. It was a mess when I first started. No one ever stopped by. But now, it looks like a completely different room. Pack members started stopping by to study and hang out. They still made faces when they saw me, but no one ever said anything. With the money I was earning while working in the library for Alpha Black, I was able to save up enough to replace my wardrobe when I got to college. Money really wasn't an issue, my parents were loaded and gave me a decent allowance, which I saved. And every summer I worked for Alpha Black, who paid me well and I save it all. With the job from the library though, I didn't need to touch my savings. I wanted to leave everything behind. I bought a potion from a witch in the city that will mask my scent from other supernaturals, making me smell like a human. It was an extremely expensive potion, but I needed it if I wanted to blend in with them. As I finished up for the day, I stopped by Alpha Black's office to drop off my "thank you" letter as today would be my last day working in the library. Tomorrow is my 18th birthday and the day after, I will be heading off to college. My parents insisted on dropping me off, but I already bought my plane ticket. We coame to a compromise that they could take me to the airport, instead of driving me across country. I couldn't bare to be in a car with them for that long. I would go insane. They have already smothered me the whole summer just to make sure I didn't go back to the willow. I wasn't rebellious, so I wouldn't have gone. But I was stubborn, and I asked my mom every day what she knew about the forbidden woods and why they were forbidden. She never once gave me an answer, and finally, I let it go. "Marcy, I'm sad this is your last day here at the library. I want to thank you for all you've done to bring it back to life." Alpha Black says as I hand him my letter. "What is this?" "It's just a thank you. I appreciate you letting me work here for the summer," I said with a big smile on my face. "Nonsense. I'm the lucky one. I appreciate you for your hard work," Alpha Black says with a soft smile. "Marce, I want to give you something." He says as he opened a drawer on his desk and takes out a white envelope. He slides it on the desk towards me and I pick it up, about to open it. "Don't open it yet. I want you to wait until you're 18. Call it a birthday gift, though I'm not sure you're going to like it." "Okay", I smiled softly. Goddess, why does he have to be mated and older than me? After all this time, my crush on him has yet to cease. He was just so perfect all around. He even remembered my birthday and got me a gift. I was beyond jealous of the Luna, but I also respected her. I just prayed that maybe one day I would find someone as perfect as Alpha Black. *** My birthday came and went just like any other birthday. My parents took me out to eat at my favorite restaurant. We visited my dad's family, which is always exhausting, considering how much they hated me. After the visit, we went shopping and then finally came home. My mom made the shrimp tacos that I loved so much and baked her famous chocolate cake that she makes me every year. Alpha Black even stopped by with the Luna to wish me a happy birthdayand give me a gift. He also wanted to check if I had gained a wolf. I didn't want to disappoint him, but I knew I wasn't going to get one. Hybrids were just not meant to be, and the punishment for being a hybrid was no wolf. After the day ended, I went back to my room, excited about leaving tomorrow. The next day came soon enough. I had packed a single suitcase consisting of my favorite outfits, makeup and laptop. I kept the potion and letter that Alpha Black gave me in my purse, planning to open it once I got to campus. With how busy I got yesterday, I wasn't able to find the time to read it. I raced down the stairs where my parents were waiting to take me to the airport. The short drive seemed to take forever as my excitement got the best of me. "Sweetie, I know it has been hard on you being a hybrid and not having a wolf, but you know, you are always welcomed in this pack. Alpha Black made sure of that," my dad says as he hugs me tightly. "And please come home for the holidays, it would mean the world to us." "I will, dad. Don't worry." I say. I adjusted my clothes as they oddly felt tighter than normal. "Marcy are you okay?" My moms concerned voice hits me. "I feel fine. Why?" "Your eyes, they're green!" She says. "Are you wearing contacts?" "It must be the potion. I got one to mask my scent so I wouldn't attract unwanted attention from supernaturals who might be at my school." I lied. I don't know why I lied, but I did. "You smell the same to me, it must not have fully kicked in yet." My dad said as he sniffed the air. "I didn't know the masking potion would do that. But I guess I never needed to use one to know." My mother mumbled. "Anyways, call us when you land, and when you get settled in. I love you so much and be safe," she said as she wrapped me in a tight hug. "I'd better get going. I don't want to miss my flight." I said, pulling myself apart from my mom. "Before you go, your mother and I got you something," my dad reaches into his pocket to pull out a rectangular box. "You may not be able to link me, but you will always be able to contact me and your mom, through this," he says as I stare at the most beautiful jewelry set I have ever seen. There was a white gold necklace with a little wolf sitting in a crescent moon. Matching crescent moon earrings and a charm bracelet with a howling wolf, a bat and vampire fangs. The whole "vampires can turn into bats" thing was a huge misconception that humans came up with, but it was still fun to joke about. Tears welled up in my eyes as I moved my hair out the way so my dad could put the necklace on me, while my mom fastened the bracelet to my wrist. Once they were done, I quickly replaced my hoop earrings with the ones my parents gave me. "How?" I asked as I admired the bracelet. "You know my witch friend, Merideth? Well, she is the High Priestest of the North American Wiccan Coven," my mom said matter of factly. "Now you can link with me and mom if you ever need anything. As long as you are wearing one of these, you can link us at anytime, from any distance." "Wow mom, you have friends in high places," I smiled at her. "Eh, she owed me a favor. I was just cashing in." She waved me off. "Now you better get going before you miss your flight." Oh s**t. I completely lost track of time. I gave my parents one last hug and ran off to TSA. The good thing about being in a city full of supernaturals is you didn't have to hide your powers. Sure there were humans who came to visit the city, but none lived here. And those who visited always had altered memories thanks to the water they consumed. It was specifically designed for humans. Supernaturals can drink it with no effects, but when humans drink it, it alters their memories. The local witches coven created the potion to keep the supernaturals safe from humans and added it to the water supply. Once I made it to security, I quickly made my way to the gate, jumping between corridors to move faster. Right as I made it to my gate, I saw him. He was wearing a plain black t-shirt with black gym shorts. Casual at it's finest. He didn't seem to notice me as he was on a call, but I couldn't resist staring. He was tall and his muscles were well defined, poking out from his shirt. When he turned around, our eyes locked and the scent of freshly ground coffee hit me. I knew I was drooling, but I couldn't help myself. I didn't think this was possible, since I didn't have a wolf, but I knew this man had to have been my mate. I felt it with every fiber of my being. My body, soul and mind were calling for him. I felt my heart race as he started walking up to me, ending his call. My body buzzed as I watched him gracefully stalk towards me. I loudly gulped as this God of a man grabbed me in his arms and deeply breathed me in. Tingles shot through my whole body as I relished the feeling. I felt a growl low in my throat as I was finally able to say the only thing I could at the moment. "Mate".
