Jame's POV
The moment Marcy and her parents left the office, I started counting down the minutes until I would see her again. I was happy to find out she was a part of David's pack, considering he was the only person I knew who didn't despise hybrids.
Since becoming Alpha, he has paved the way for creating a more accepting city, though most still don't agree. It was David who held a meeting with Cassius, the vampire clan leader before Viktor, that led to a peace treaty being formed. Through the treaty, vampires were allowed on his pack lands and wolves were allowed in the vampire territory.
There were still limitations though. Vampires were not allowed in certain areas of the pack's land due to the security of the pack as a whole. The pack house, the pack library and the pack gardens were off limits. The school was a gray area. Vampires may enter schools as long as it is related to a sporting event or academic event.
The same holds true for the wolves in the vampire's territory. In exchange, the pack and the vampire clan would share the duty of guarding the borders from outside threats. Soon after the treaty was signed, the two neighboring packs, including mine, joined the treaty.
The humans that used to live in the city all left due to the influence of dark witches. It almost started a war between David's pack and the dark Wiccan coven. Luckily, David was convinced it was better to have a city made up of the supernatural than to have a city where we had to constantly hide from humans.
The dark witches came up with a potion that was infused with water to alter the memories of humans, making it seem like any other human city. The potion would only work on humans, making it completely safe for the other supernatural in the city. Light witches maintained it to make sure the dark witches didn't taint it with anything else.
I glanced at the clock on the wall, seeing that it had already been an hour since Marcy had left, and I was still in this office. I was annoyed. I just wanted to be with my mate. It has been hard for 3 months without seeing her or holding her. I didn't want to waste any more time.
"I guess I'm boring you. I should sign these, so you can get to Marcy," David said with a devious smile.
"Yes, that would be nice," I said sarcastically.
"Listen, I know you don't want any part in pack politics," he started.
"David, where is this going?" I asked sternly. I know whatever it is he has to say, I don't want anything to do with it.
"James, I'm not asking you this as the Alpha, I'm asking you as your cousin," he says, dropping his head for a second before continuing. "When you were 13, I asked you if you wanted to be Alpha. Your eyes got so big, and you eagerly said, yes."
"I remember," I stated. "I also remember my dad saying that I couldn't because the title would be passed down to Kevin since he was older than me."
"And what did I say after that?" He asked me.
"That I could be the Alpha of your pack when you retire." I thought about it for a second as I tried to remember that day. "I know you only said it to make me feel better."
"No. The offer still stands, James," he said seriously.
"And what about Devyn? It's his birthright." I said, thinking about Devyn. Was this why he seemed different when I saw him earlier? Did he know his dad didn't want him to be Alpha?
"Ah, yes. Devyn. He was only 7 when I offered that to you. But the offer still stands."
"Why? Devyn is perfectly capable of being Alpha." I stated, confused by why he was asking me.
"Yes, he is capable. But I will not have him ruin everything I built for this city." He sighed.
"I knew back then that Devyn and I didn't have the same views. He was easily influenced and followed the masses when it came to certain things... Things like hybrids not being allowed in the pack. I saw the way he looked at Marcy. He hated her," he said, making me growl. "But he loved her more."
"What the f**k does this have to do with my mate? Did he bully her?" I said, trying my best not to let my anger take control.
"This has everything to do with Marcy. I didn't expect you to be her mate, but now that I know you are, I, now more than ever, want you to take over my pack." He said, unfazed by the aura rolling off me.
"You haven't answered my question, David. Did Devyn hurt Marcy?" I asked again through gritted teeth.
"No. I told you, he loved her more than he hated her. His hatred was probably just a front to cover up how much he loved her."
"David. I don't have time for your f*****g short answers. Tell me why you wanted Marcy to be mated to Devyn. Why this has anything to do with her in the first place? And why don't you want your son to be the next Alpha? Only then will I think about your damn offer." I seethed.
"Fine then," he says as he gets up and pours himself a glass of whiskey. He downs his glass before pouring another one and offering me one. I glared at him but took the drink anyway.
"A little over 20 years ago, I signed the peace treaty with Clan Leader Cassius. It was no secret, even back then, that often species would date outside their own. As long as they didn't procreate with each other, no one seemed to care. Do you know the real reason why dark witches were allowed on our packlands?" He asked me.
"Because of the peace treaty?" I stated, not understanding where he was going with this.
"No. Our peace treaty is with the vampires. All the other supernaturals were free to come and go as they pleased. As long as they didn't belong to a coven or another pack. Do you know why?"
"If I knew, I would have told you. Get to the point, David. My mate is waiting for me." I growled.
"Many years ago, dark witches and other supernaturals aided the Wolf King in the fight against the vampire King. The details don't matter. What matters is that when the wolves and vampires came to an agreement that they would cease all fighting as long as they were off of each other's lands, the High Priestess was livid." He says, pausing to take a drink of his whiskey.
"She was angry because she was in love with both the Vampire King and the Werewolf King. She wanted them to stop fighting and find a way for them to be together. The problem was that they had both chosen a Queen, and neither were in love with her. This caused her heartache and she cursed the land." He stopped and finished his drink before pouring another.
"To make a long story short, she made it to where no one can deny the supernatural to co-exist. If there is any supernatural who does not belong to a vampire clan, werewolf pack or Wiccan coven, they shall be allowed entry to any pack or clan."
"That doesn't make sense. If that were the case, how are there rogues?" I asked.
"This applies to all supernatural except wolves and vampires, since they were the ones to cause the most damage. When it came to the witches, light witches always stayed in their coven. Dark witches were the ones who tended to leave a coven, hence why there are so few dark witch covens."
"Okay but again, how does this have anything to do with Marcy?" I said, finishing my glass.
"A part of the curse the High Priestess swore, was that the Kings would live until the day when wolves and vampires and any other supernatural could love freely, regardless of what they were born as. She could not control who the Moon Goddess or Father Vampire mated or partnered to their kind, but she did make a deal with the Moon Goddess and Mother Vampire."
"Mother Vampire? I've never heard of her before. Only the Father Vampire." I said, more confused than ever.
" How do you think the Father Vampire came into existence? It was the Mother who turned him into the Father Vampire. But that's not important right now."
"Okay then hurry it up." I said, getting irritated all over again.
"The High Priestess made sure that she would be awakened when a hybrid, of both vampire and werewolf was born. But not just any hybrid, a hybrid with the power of both wolf and vampire," he said.
"Don't all hybrids have abilities of both species?"
"It's hard to say. The story has been mixed up over the years, and all known hybrids were slaughtered to prevent the High Priestess from awakening. Assuming she hasn't made herself known, it's safe to say other hybrids who do exist that are unknown, do not possess both vampire and werewolf abilities. Likely, one outweighs the other."
"And who is responsible for the slaughter of the hybrids?" I asked, angry that Marcy could possibly be in danger.
"At first it was by order of the Kings. They would hire dark wizards, rogues, vampires, and any other supernatural to complete the task. Cassius and I agreed that those dated views are what's causing the lack of peace, which is the real reason the treaty was formed. We hoped to create a safe place for the supernatural to live together and love each other freely. We knew that the High Priestess would awaken again. It was just a matter of time."
"So how does that explain why you wanted Marcy to be mated to Devyn?"
"Because Marcy is a symbol. Marcy is special. Only a hybrid, born of the love only seen in destined partners and destined mates, will possess every ability inherited by each parent and then will be blessed by the Moon Goodess and Mother Vampire. That hybrid will rise to power and sit on the throne," David said, making me uneasy.
"Marcy needs some level of authority, someone strong to fight with her. Because she is the product of true love. She is the one who awakens the High Priestess."
