The Woman In The Photograph

1082 Words
The city blurred past the car windows. Evelyn sat silently in the passenger seat, still holding her mother's letter. She had read it so many times that she could almost remember every word. But one sentence wouldn't leave her mind. Trust no one from the Vale family. She glanced at Kael. He was focused on the road, his expression impossible to read. “You're a Vale.” “Yes.” “My mother specifically warned me about your family.” “Yes.” “And I'm still sitting in your car.” A faint smile touched his lips. “You have a talent for making dangerous decisions.” “Maybe I don't have a choice.” Kael's smile disappeared. “You always have a choice.” “Then why are you helping me?” He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he turned onto a quieter road. “I made a promise.” “To my mother?” “Yes.” Evelyn looked at him. “What exactly did she ask you to do?” “Find you.” “And?” “Keep you alive.” Her stomach tightened. “Why?” Kael's eyes remained on the road. “Because Elena knew someone would eventually come looking for you.” “Who?” “We're about to find out.” The car stopped outside an old building. It looked abandoned. Evelyn frowned. “Where are we?” “An old Vale property.” She immediately looked at him. “You brought me to another Vale property?” “This one hasn't been used in years.” “That doesn't make me feel better.” “It wasn't supposed to.” Kael got out. Evelyn followed. Inside, the building smelled of dust and old wood. Kael led her down a narrow hallway. At the end was a locked door. He pulled out a key. Evelyn stared at it. “You already had the key?” “My mother gave it to me.” He unlocked the door. Inside was a small office. Unlike the rest of the building, everything had been carefully preserved. Old files. Photographs. Letters. A desk. Evelyn walked toward the photographs. Then she stopped. There she was. Her mother. Standing beside a young Kael. Evelyn turned sharply. “You knew her.” Kael didn't deny it. “Yes.” “How?” “My mother introduced us.” “When?” “Seven years ago.” Evelyn stared at him. “You were there.” “Yes.” “The night my father died?” Kael nodded. Her chest tightened. “What happened that night?” Kael looked at the photograph. “Elena came to see me.” “Why?” “She wanted me to protect you.” “From your father?” “Yes.” Evelyn swallowed. “What did she know?” Kael hesitated. “Something about Daniel.” “My father?” “Yes.” “What?” Kael opened one of the drawers. Inside was a file. He handed it to her. Evelyn opened it. Her father's name appeared across the first page. DANIEL HART — CONFIDENTIAL She began reading. Daniel had been investigating financial transfers connected to the Vale Group. But that wasn't the shocking part. There were records showing that Daniel had secretly transferred money to an unknown account every month. The account belonged to— Evelyn's eyes widened. “That's my mother's name.” Kael nodded. “Elena was receiving money from your father.” “But why?” “I don't know.” Evelyn turned the page. A photograph fell out. It showed Elena standing outside a hospital. Holding a baby. The same photograph from the archive. But this version had something written on the back. SHE WASN'T BORN A HART. Evelyn stopped breathing. She looked at Kael. “What does this mean?” “I don't know.” “You keep saying that.” “Because I don't have every answer.” “Then help me find them.” Kael stepped closer. “I will.” Before Evelyn could respond, they heard a noise outside. Both turned. Someone had entered the building. Kael immediately switched off the lights. “Stay here.” Evelyn whispered, “Who is it?” “I don't know.” Footsteps moved closer. Slowly. Then stopped outside the office. A shadow appeared beneath the door. Evelyn held her breath. The handle turned. Kael stood between her and the door. It opened. A woman stepped inside. Evelyn stared at her. The woman looked familiar. Very familiar. Then she spoke. “Evelyn?” Evelyn's heart stopped. The woman's eyes filled with tears. “It's me.” Evelyn couldn't speak. Kael's expression changed. He knew her. The woman took one trembling step forward. “I've been trying to find you for seven years.” Evelyn shook her head. “Who are you?” The woman looked at her. “My name is Elise Morgan.” Evelyn's eyes widened. The missing woman from the photograph. Elise reached into her bag and pulled out an old photograph. She handed it to Evelyn. It showed Daniel Hart, Elena Hart, Victor Vale— and a baby. Evelyn. But written beneath the photograph was a sentence that made her blood run cold. THE BABY WAS NEVER DANIEL'S DAUGHTER. Evelyn looked at Kael. He stared at the photograph in disbelief. Then Elise whispered, “Your father isn't the man you think he is.” Evelyn's voice trembled. “Who is my real father?” Elise looked toward the door. “That's the question your mother disappeared to answer.” Suddenly, headlights flashed through the windows. Kael's expression hardened. “We have to go.” Elise shook her head. “It's too late.” A car door slammed outside. Then another. Kael grabbed Evelyn's hand. “Stay close.” Evelyn looked at Elise. “What about you?” Elise smiled sadly. “Go.” “No.” “Evelyn, listen to me.” Elise stepped closer. “Your mother trusted me with one secret.” She leaned toward Evelyn and whispered, “Your real father is alive.” A loud crash came from downstairs. Kael pulled Evelyn toward the exit. Behind them, Elise shouted one final warning. “Don't let Kael take you to the Vale estate!” Evelyn stopped. She looked at Kael. His expression was unreadable. “Why?” she asked. Elise's voice echoed through the building. “Because that's where your mother disappeared.”
