The Man Who Saved Her

The knock came again. “Kael.” Victor's voice carried through the house. “I know you're in there.” Evelyn looked at her mother. “What did you mean?” Elena's eyes remained fixed on the door. “Your father saved your life.” “Daniel?” Elena nodded. “Daniel knew he wasn't your biological father. But he loved you as if you were.” Evelyn swallowed hard. “Then who is my real father?” Elena hesitated. Before she could answer, footsteps sounded downstairs. Victor had entered the house. Kael stepped toward the staircase. “Stay here.” Evelyn grabbed his arm. “No.” Kael looked at her. “This is between my father and me.” “My entire life is involved in this.” Elena stepped between them. “Both of you listen to me.” Her voice was urgent. “Victor cannot know that I found you.” Kael frowned. “You've been hiding from him all these years?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because he wasn't the only person looking for me.” A confused expression crossed Evelyn's face. “Who else?” Elena looked at her daughter. “Your real father's enemies.” A heavy silence followed. Kael's phone vibrated. He checked it. His expression changed. “What?” Evelyn looked at him. “What happened?” “Someone has locked the gates.” Elena's face went pale. “They're not here alone.” Kael immediately understood. “How many?” “My men say at least ten cars.” Elena closed her eyes. “They found us.” Victor's voice echoed from downstairs. “Elena.” Evelyn froze. Victor knew her mother was there. “Come downstairs.” Elena looked at Kael. “You have to get Evelyn out.” Kael shook his head. “Not without you.” “You don't understand.” “I understand enough.” Elena grabbed his arm. “Kael, listen to me. Your father will use Evelyn to get to her biological father.” Kael's eyes narrowed. “Who is he?” Elena looked toward Evelyn. “Adrian Cross.” Evelyn's face went blank. “That name…” Kael suddenly stiffened. “You're talking about Adrian Cross?” Elena nodded. “My father?” Evelyn whispered. “Yes.” She looked at her daughter with tears in her eyes. “Adrian Cross is your biological father.” Evelyn struggled to process the words. “Why did Daniel raise me?” “Because Adrian was being hunted. Daniel promised to protect you until it was safe.” “Then why did Mom disappear?” Elena's voice trembled. “Because seven years ago, Adrian returned.” Kael stared at her. “And Victor found out.” Elena nodded. “Your father wanted you back. Victor wanted Adrian destroyed.” A loud crash came from downstairs. Someone had forced open a door. Kael reached for his phone. “We're running out of time.” Elena looked at Evelyn. “There's something else.” “What?” “Your father left something for you.” She reached inside her coat and pulled out a small metal pendant. Evelyn recognized it immediately. She had seen it in an old photograph of Adrian. Elena placed it in her hand. “It's a key.” “To what?” “I don't know.” Evelyn looked at it. There was a tiny symbol engraved on the back. A flame surrounded by ice. Kael stared at it. “That symbol…” “You recognize it?” Evelyn asked. “My father used it.” Elena shook her head. “No.” Kael looked at her. “It belonged to Adrian.” Before anyone could speak, the bedroom door suddenly opened. A man stood there. Kael immediately moved in front of Evelyn. But the man didn't attack. He simply looked at Elena. “It's time.” Elena's face went pale. “Who are you?” Evelyn whispered. The man looked at her. “Your father's messenger.” Kael raised his weapon. “Where is Adrian?” The man smiled. “Closer than you think.” Then he looked at Evelyn. “Your father wants you to come home.” Evelyn's heart pounded. “Where?” The man pointed toward the window. Across the road, a black car waited beneath the trees. A figure stood beside it. Even from a distance, Evelyn could tell the man was watching her. The messenger spoke quietly. “Your father has been waiting seven years.” Evelyn stepped toward the window. “Is that him?” The man nodded. “Yes.” Kael moved beside her. The figure across the road raised his head. Their eyes met through the glass. Evelyn couldn't explain it, but something inside her recognized him. Her father. Alive. Watching her. Then Victor's voice came from the hallway. “Kael.” Kael turned. Victor stood at the entrance. His expression was calm. Almost too calm. His eyes moved from Kael to Elena. Then to Evelyn. “So,” he said quietly. “The secret is finally out.” Evelyn stared at him. “You knew my father was alive.” Victor smiled. “I knew much more than that.” He looked at the pendant in Evelyn's hand. “And now you have the key.” Kael stepped forward. “What does it open?” Victor's smile disappeared. “The door to everything your families have been fighting over.” A sudden explosion shook the house. Windows rattled. Everyone turned toward the sound. Victor's men rushed into the hallway. The figure outside was gone. And on the floor beside Evelyn's feet lay a folded note. She picked it up with trembling hands. Only one sentence was written inside. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY YOUR FATHER LEFT YOU.
