CHAPTER 15 The sun was hanging low in the October sky, casting long shadows across the yard. Grandpa Oakley tugged at his thermal vest. Late afternoons turned cool quickly, especially with a Northeast wind blowing. The farmer checked his watch and looked up, shielding his eyes from the sun’s glare. Coming out of the shadows, he saw Monroe and his granddaughter trotting down the path toward home. “Just about time,” he shouted as the pony drew closer. “Another few minutes and I’d have started to worry about you two.” “Now Grandpa,” Carly retorted. “You knew I’d be home before dark. Always am. You can count on me.” “Sure can, like you have a built-in clock in your brain,” her grandfather said. “It’s Monroe can’t tell time.” Then he let out a big laugh. Carly joined in the laug
