CHAPTER 9 Hampton couldn’t believe the brashness of the red fox that had stolen his breakfast. Not only was that horrible man shooting at him, but now another creature had run away with his food. Hampton crept carefully through the shadow of the woods, as he started out after the red fox and the food. He watched the fox disappear into the tall grass but waited to make sure it was safe before setting out after him. He put his keen nose to the ground and circled the thicket where he thought the fox had been hiding. It wasn’t long before he picked up the familiar scent, the smell he had been taught to follow since a puppy. His foot was feeling better. The fox knew the woods well and expected Hampton would soon be on his trail. He had watched Strange Willie tantalizing the hound
