CHAPTER 30
Two days later as Carly sat with Hampton on
her front porch wondering when Strange Willie would return, she
noticed the small blackened tin tucked under a porch railing. She
carefully pried open the tin, revealing its contents, an unscarred
gold locket. Inside the locket Carly found a tiny photograph of a
handsome proud soldier in full dress uniform. She closed the locket
and turning it over, discovered a simple message engraved on the
back “With Love, William, 1967.”
Late that afternoon Strange Willie returned
for his ‘dawg’. No one could tell who was more excited, Strange
Willie or Hampton. And as he slowly rode away with Hampton trotting
by his side, only Carly saw the red fox peeking for an instant from
the saddlebag on his motorcycle.
