CHAPTER 13 Hampton enjoyed the cool dampness of the shallow pool in which he rested. Knowing he had stayed too long, he stretched as he rose to his feet sniffing alternately the air and the ground. The sun was high in the sky and the day had turned unusually warm for October, the temperature nearing 80 degrees. A short distance away, his bushy tail wrapped around his body, the red fox sat in the tall grasses waiting for Hampton’s return to the chase. Little did Hampton know that the fox was leading him away from danger. If only the hound would pick up the cue and follow him toward safety. The fox purposely left a strong scent near where Hampton stopped to catch his breath and now his keen sense of smell picked up that scent. From his perch, the fox could see the tip of Hampton
