There were empty chairs next to Dylan, which were meant to be filled by the last generation of the alpha couple on the council. Unfortunately, they would remain empty since the alpha's parents had been killed a long time ago. Like me, the alpha understood the significance of the void where someone should belong. As we arrived in the room and greeted the council with honor and respect, we filled the chairs on the right side. First, my uncle sat next to the alpha, followed by my aunt next to her husband. Lizzie occupied the next seat with her boyfriend Antony in tow, who smiled at the parents on the other side of the council table. I was the final addition with two more empty chairs following. I tried to cross my legs, but the tight dress around my hips left little room for such a movement. I glanced over the dining table covered with fancy glasses and plates in neutral colors, a chandelier decorated the center of the table with black candles on it. From my chair, I finally had a good vantage point to assess the other women at the dinner table. I was definitely not the most beautiful; I was sure of that with so many slim and slender women who could easily pass for runway models. There were other young women, roughly the alpha's age, probably in their thirties, who were simply stunning alongside their husbands, serving at the table with champagne. With their long, slender legs, lips in various shades of colors, and sparkling golden eyes that revealed the wolf within, I knew there was no comparison. I had plenty of curves, my red hair was dyed and fell in a controlled manner down my back with the help of straighteners and curling irons. My eyes were intensely black, not drawing any attention at all, my lips seemed too plump for any attention-grabbing lipstick, and I had too many freckles on my skin. But what deeply hurt me was my lack of sophistication, something these married or single women had in abundance. Everyone in that room shone, while I remained so dull, especially in my tight black dress that didn't fit at all with the luxurious surroundings. While everyone was dressed for an important and luxurious dinner, I was dressed like a cheap nightclub floozy. I waited for the alpha to say something so we could move forward with the celebratory dinner when I remembered something urgent, something I shouldn't have forgotten but now seemed like a matter of life or death. The birth control pills. I had forgotten to take the pill; I had completely forgotten while I was getting ready, especially when I went downstairs to get it from the bathroom because of the argument with my aunt in the dining room. DAMN! DAMN! DAMN! I looked at the clock behind the council in a varnished wooden frame. It had just turned 9:00 PM sharp when I realized that, by the way things were going, I would have only two more hours before the medication lost its effect. The last pill I had taken had been the previous night, close to midnight, and what's worse, if this infernal dinner took too long, I would be the only lycan stuck on the first day of Lupercalia without a partner to relieve me from this torture. Without a pill to alleviate the symptoms, without a male to solve the problem if option number one expired, and of course, I was still inside the alpha's house, where there should be at least ten single lycan warriors patrolling the territory in security mode, and they would be drawn to my fertile scent like flies. I picked up my champagne glass and downed the alcohol in one go. That's when the first appetizer dish was served with the alpha's permission, a shell with some type of fish inside. The red-haired werewolf assigned to serve me on our side of the table immediately sniffed me while placing the plate in front of me, and his eyes sparkled with curiosity, as if his wolf already knew that the birth control effect was fading faster than expected. This meant that I began to emit a faint aphrodisiac scent, damn it! I felt my face burning, and my cheeks must have turned pure red as the conversation unfolded at the table. I narrowed my eyes as a warning to the waiter, held his gaze, showing him that I was not interested in any s****l advances. He was cute, don't get me wrong, but I wasn't planning to break my lycan seal tonight or any other night with any male from this pack. "I'm so screwed!" I thought to myself, clutching the skirt as the waiter walked away disappointed. He immediately backed off with my gaze, which was good since no one at the table seemed to have seen what had happened as they were all focused on their plates or the alpha. I was about to breathe a sigh of relief about that when I felt someone's gaze weighing on me. I didn't dare lift my eyes from the hem of the skirt I was holding. This gaze, wherever it was coming from, had a powerful attraction; it seemed to be intensifying the heat of it from me, magnifying it when I refused it with all my efforts for years and years. Making me burn even stronger with the effect of the medication, if that were possible. "Please, let this dinner end soon," I prayed, realizing that I hadn't paid attention to any of the side conversations happening in the room.
