Chapter 3

Luna knew she was in trouble the moment she opened the front door. The house was quiet. Too quiet. She stepped inside and slowly closed the door behind her. “Luna.” She froze. Her mother was sitting in the living room. Arms crossed. Worried eyes. And beside her sat her father. He wasn’t worried. He was angry. Luna swallowed. “Hi, Mum.” Her mother stood immediately. “Where have you been?” “Out.” Her father’s eyebrow lifted. “Out?” Luna sighed. “I went to the training ground.” “We know where you went,” her father said. “The question is why you disappeared afterward.” Luna looked away. Her mother walked closer. “You came home hours late. You didn’t tell us where you were going. You didn’t tell us where you were. Do you have any idea how worried I was?” “Mum, I’m fine.” “That isn’t the point.” Luna opened her mouth. Her father raised a hand. “No. Let me speak.” Luna closed it. “You broke an Alpha-grade training sword.” “It broke.” “Luna.” “What? It did.” “You challenged the Alpha.” “I answered his questions.” “You argued with him.” “He was annoying.” Her father stared at her. Her mother closed her eyes. “Luna…” “What?” Luna asked. “I didn’t insult him.” “You told the Alpha of Blackthorn Pack that you didn’t respect him.” “I said he hadn’t earned my respect.” “That is worse!” Luna tried not to smile. Her father pointed toward the stairs. “You are lucky Adrian Blackthorn didn’t punish you.” “He told me to replace the sword.” “And how exactly are you going to do that?” Luna’s smile disappeared. “…I’ll figure it out.” Her father shook his head. “You always say that.” “And I always figure it out.” “That’s not the point.” Her mother stepped between them. “Enough.” She looked at Luna carefully. “Are you hurt?” Luna blinked. “No.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” “Did anyone follow you?” The question caught Luna off guard. She stared at her mother. “No.” Her mother seemed relieved. “Good.” Luna frowned. “Why did you ask that?” Her mother hesitated. “Because you disappeared.” “That isn’t the only reason.” Silence. Luna noticed it. Her mother was hiding something. Before she could ask, her father spoke. “Go upstairs. Change your clothes.” “Why?” “Because tomorrow is the Moon Ceremony.” Luna groaned. “I forgot.” “You forgot?” “I’ve been busy.” “With what? Breaking swords?” “Mum…” Her mother sighed. “The whole pack will be there tomorrow night. The Alpha will be there. The elders will be there. You cannot behave the way you did today.” Luna folded her arms. “I wasn’t planning to start a fight.” Her father gave her a look. “Good.” “I said I wasn’t planning to.” “That doesn’t mean you won’t.” Luna rolled her eyes. “I can control myself.” Her father muttered, “That’s what worries me.” Luna turned toward the stairs. “Goodnight.” “Luna.” She stopped. Her father’s voice softened slightly. “I’m angry because you scared your mother.” Luna looked back. Her mother was still watching her. The anger in her father’s face had faded. Only concern remained. Luna’s expression softened. “I’m sorry, Mum.” Her mother nodded. “Come here.” Luna walked over and hugged her. Her mother held her tightly. “Don’t scare me like that again.” “I won’t.” “Promise?” Luna smiled. “I promise.” Her mother released her. “Now go.” Luna headed upstairs. But before she reached her room, she heard her parents talking quietly behind her. “She cannot keep doing this,” her father said. “I know.” “And tomorrow—” “I know.” There was a pause. Then her mother whispered something Luna couldn’t hear. Her father answered immediately. “She doesn’t need to know yet.” Luna stopped walking. Yet? She turned. The hallway was empty. She stared down the stairs. Her parents had gone into the kitchen. Luna frowned. What didn’t she need to know? She almost went back. Almost. Instead, she continued to her room. Once inside, she locked the door. Then she reached into her pocket. The silver pendant was still there. She placed it on her desk. For a few seconds, nothing happened. Then— Warmth. Luna pulled her hand back. The pendant was glowing faintly. “What the…” She picked it up again. The warmth disappeared. Luna stared at it. “Okay. That’s strange.” She turned it over. Her name was still engraved on the back. LUNA VALE. And beneath it— the date of her birth. She had no idea who had made it. She had no idea why someone had her name. And she definitely didn’t know why it reacted to her touch. Luna dropped it onto the desk. “I’m not dealing with this tonight.” She changed into her night clothes and climbed into bed. Tomorrow was the Moon Ceremony. The entire pack would gather under the full moon. It was supposed to be a night of celebration. A night when unmated wolves stood before the ceremonial moonstone and waited to see whether they would feel the first sign of their destined bond. Luna had never cared much about it. She didn’t believe the moon decided everything. People made their own choices. At least, that’s what she believed. She closed her eyes. Then she felt it. A strange pull. Not painful. Not frightening. Just… sudden. Luna opened her eyes. Her heart had started beating faster. She sat up. The feeling was coming from somewhere outside. She looked toward her window. Nothing. Just moonlight. Then the pull disappeared. Luna stared into the darkness. “What was that?” She didn’t know. But downstairs, her mother had suddenly gone silent. And somewhere across the pack territory, Adrian Blackthorn stood beneath the same moon. He felt it too. A strange pull. He frowned. Then it vanished. Adrian looked toward the direction of the Vale house. His expression hardened. “Impossible.” He turned away. He had no idea what the feeling meant. And he had no intention of finding out. Not yet.
