Chapter 3

The flickering candlelight cast long, dancing shadows across the stone walls of the dimly lit chamber, creating an atmosphere thick with tension and foreboding. The air was heavy with the scent of melting wax, mingling with the faintest hint of damp earth that seeped through the ancient stones. At the center of the room, a massive oak table, scarred and worn by years of strategy and conflict, bore maps strewn with inked markings and small, intricately carved figures representing troops and terrain. King Alaric of Tàrà'lunàr, his brow deeply furrowed in concentration, leaned over the table, tracing the lines of a carefully drawn route with a calloused finger. His dark cloak pooled around him like a shadow, absorbing the light and adding to the weight that seemed to press down upon his shoulders. The golden crown atop his head felt heavier than ever, a constant reminder of the responsibilities he bore.“Your Majesty,” a voice whispered from the corner, breaking the silence like a crack of thunder. “King Henry of Vallor agrees to make an alliance with Castonia.”King Alaric’s brow furrowed deeper, a storm brewing in his deep-set eyes as he lifted his gaze from the maps. “So you mean the Prince and the Princess are getting married soon?” He flicked his long, silver beard thoughtfully, the weight of the news settling heavily in the air like a leaden fog. “Yes, my king, the marriage is today,” Elys replied, stepping further into the flickering light, his face illuminated momentarily, revealing the worry etched into his features. “The union will strengthen their forces against us should they see us as a threat. We must act quickly.”Alaric straightened, the flicker of candlelight revealing the tension coiling in his jaw like a tightly wound spring. “A marriage of convenience, then. They think it will safeguard them, but it may also embolden their ambitions. We cannot allow this to happen unchecked.” His voice was low and gravelly, each word dripping with authority.Elys nodded, his expression grave, the weight of their predicament hanging heavily between them. “If we can disrupt the ceremony or sow discord between them, it may weaken their alliance before it even begins.” The king considered this, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the maps again, the intricate lines and symbols reflecting the turmoil of their situation. “Send word to our spies in Vallor. I want to know every detail of their plans. We must be one step ahead.”“Yes, Your Highness,” Elys replied, turning to leave, his footsteps echoing softly against the stone floor. “Wait!” King Alaric ordered, his voice firm and commanding. “Have you delivered my message to Castonia?”“Yes, Your Highness,” Elys replied, pausing at the door, a flicker of relief crossing his features. “The message was delivered under the cover of night.”“Good,” King Alaric nodded, a brief flicker of relief illuminating his otherwise stern visage. • • • • • • • • • Meanwhile, Adrien left the room after discussing matters with Derek, the weight of responsibility pressing down on him like a heavy cloak. He had sent a message to the council but was still not satisfied; he had to notify his brothers about the pending danger that loomed like a dark cloud over their heads. Just as he was walking down the grand staircase, the polished marble steps gleaming under the soft glow of chandeliers, a young lady in front of him suddenly slipped into something invisible. She was about to hit the floor when Adrien lunged forward, instincts honed by years of training kicking in just as she began to fall. He caught her just in time, his arms wrapping around her waist as he steadied her, the warmth of her body radiating against him.“Careful!” he exclaimed, concern lacing his voice. The girl looked up at him, her eyes wide with shock and gratitude, shimmering like pools of liquid amber. “Thank you,” she breathed, her voice trembling slightly as she regained her balance. “I didn’t see that step coming.” Adrien's heart raced as he recognized Samantha, the dancer from the night before. The memory of their brief but enchanting dance flooded back, igniting a warmth within him that contrasted sharply with the urgency of the moment. “Samantha,” he said, his voice softer now, laced with genuine concern. “Are you alright?” She took a step back, her cheeks flushed beneath the delicate veil, a mixture of surprise and embarrassment flickering in her eyes as she recognized Adrien. “I’m fine, really. Just a bit clumsy,” she replied, brushing off the moment as she adjusted her veil, the fabric shimmering softly in the candlelight. Adrien couldn’t help but admire her resilience, the way she stood tall despite the embarrassment.“Clumsy or not, you should be more careful. The palace can be treacherous if you’re not paying attention,” he said, a hint of a smile breaking through the tension, his eyes sparkling with warmth. Samantha nodded, her gaze dropping to the floor, the weight of the day pressing down on her. “I was lost in thought. There’s so much happening today, and I—”Before she could finish, the distant sound of horns echoed through the halls, a deep, resonant call signaling the approach of guests for the wedding ceremony, the sound reverberating through the very stones of the palace. Adrien’s expression shifted, recalling the urgency of his own tasks. “I have to go; the wedding ceremony is about to start!” he said, urgency lacing his voice as he turned to leave hurriedly. Samantha stood there, gazing after him, still lost in the distance, her heart fluttering with a mix of emotions. She watched him disappear down the corridor, her heart racing, a whirlwind of thoughts swirling in her mind. The echoes of the horns reverberated in her consciousness, reminding her of the weight of the day ahead. With a deep breath, Samantha straightened her posture and adjusted her veil, trying to shake off the lingering embarrassment of her near fall. The palace was alive with activity, servants bustling about, their voices a low hum of excitement and anticipation. The air was thick with the scent of fresh flowers and the sweet notes of pastries being prepared for the feast. She had a role to play today, and it was crucial she didn’t let her thoughts wander too far. As she made her way toward the grand hall, her mind drifted back to Adrien. His presence had been a comforting anchor amidst the chaos, a beacon of warmth in a sea of uncertainty. She wondered if their paths would cross again once the festivities began. The thought brought a smile to her lips, a fleeting moment of joy that was quickly overshadowed by the gravity of the impending union. The wedding was not just a celebration; it was a strategic alliance that could shift the balance of power in the realm, a union forged in the fires of ambition and necessity. Meanwhile, Adrien stood outside the castle in a nearby wood, the cool breeze rustling the leaves above him, creating a symphony of whispers. He held his message bird in his right hand, its feathers glinting like jewels in the dappled sunlight. Tying the message securely to its leg, he sent it off into the sky, watching as it disappeared into the horizon. I hope this message reaches my brothers, Adrien thought, a knot of worry tightening in his stomach. Just then, he heard rustling in the bushes, and instinctively turned, his heart racing, adrenaline coursing through his veins. The quiet of the woods was suddenly filled with the sound of snapping twigs and the rustling of leaves, a warning that danger was near.He narrowed his eyes, scanning the underbrush for any sign of movement. “Who’s there?” he called out, his voice steady but laced with urgency. The tension in the air thickened, a palpable force as he prepared himself for whatever might emerge from the shadows.A moment later, two flying daggers shot toward him, glinting menacingly in the sunlight, but he skillfully dodged them, his reflexes honed from years of training. The figure started running when he realized that his plans had failed, panic evident in his movements. Adrien’s instincts kicked in as adrenaline surged through him. He quickly assessed the situation, his heart pounding like a war drum. The figure darted through the trees, but Adrien was faster, fueled by a mix of urgency and anger. “Stop!” he shouted, his voice echoing through the woods, a command that resonated with authority. “You won’t get away that easily!” With a swift motion, he drew his short sword, its blade glinting ominously in the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves, a promise of swift justice. He pursued the shadowy figure, weaving through the underbrush, determined to uncover who had attempted to attack him. The figure glanced back, panic evident in his eyes, and Adrien could see the glint of a second dagger in his hand, poised to be thrown. He feigned to the left, then quickly shifted right, anticipating the throw. The dagger whizzed past him, missing by mere inches, the sound slicing through the air like a whisper of death. Before he could resume the pursuit, the figure was already out of sight, swallowed by the shadows of the forest. Adrien paused for a moment, his breath coming in heavy gasps as he tried to analyze the situation. Was he just an ordinary bandit or a hired assassin? But his skills were far from ordinary. Who could have sent him? Adrien thought, frustration boiling within him. Just as he was about to leave, something glinted in the underbrush, catching his eye. He walked forward cautiously and found a jade pendant—it was very familiar. He took a long look at it, memories flooding back, the weight of the pendant heavy in his palm. Suddenly, Adrien’s temples throbbed. He recognized this pendant from the day Vallor soldiers killed his mother, its surface etched with the very insignia that haunted his nightmares."That could only mean one thing: the King of Vallor, whose daughter I'm going to marry, is planning to kill me secretly, the same way he killed my mother," Adrien thought, his brow creased in anger and determination as he clenched his fist tightly, the pendant digging into his palm like a reminder of the past. The stakes had just risen, and he would not allow history to repeat itself.
