Chapter Four A Dangerous Arrangement

1632 Words
Aria woke to silence. For a moment she didn’t remember where she was. The ceiling above her was unfamiliar—wide, white, and framed by tall glass windows that allowed early morning light to spill softly into the room. The bed she lay in was far larger than any she had ever slept in, the sheets smooth and cool against her skin. Then the memories rushed back. The wedding. The photograph. Daniel. Running through the rain. And Alexander Hale. Aria sat up suddenly, her heart beating faster as reality settled in. She was still wearing the oversized shirt Alexander had given her the night before. Her wedding dress was gone, replaced by something far more comfortable but also far more surreal. She had spent the night in the penthouse of her ex-fiancé’s billionaire brother. “Unbelievable,” she muttered quietly. She swung her legs off the bed and stood, walking toward the large windows. The view of the city stretched endlessly below her, sunlight now replacing the storm that had dominated the night before. Cars moved like tiny silver lines on the streets, and the world seemed strangely normal. Yet her life felt anything but normal. A soft knock sounded on the door. Aria turned. “Come in.” The door opened slightly, and a woman in a neat uniform stepped inside carrying a tray. “Good morning, miss,” the woman said politely. “Mr. Hale asked me to bring you breakfast.” Aria blinked in surprise. “Oh… thank you.” The woman placed the tray on a small table near the bed. Fresh fruit, toast, eggs, and a cup of coffee filled the plate, arranged neatly like something from a luxury hotel. “Mr. Hale is in his office,” the woman added. “He said to let him know when you wake up.” Aria nodded. “Alright.” The woman smiled politely before leaving the room. Aria stared at the breakfast tray for a moment. Part of her felt strange accepting this kind of hospitality from someone she had only met a few hours ago. But another part of her was simply too exhausted to argue. She ate slowly, her thoughts drifting back to the events of the previous day. Daniel’s betrayal still hurt, though the shock had begun to fade. Now the pain was being replaced by something colder. Disappointment. Anger. Embarrassment. She had almost married a man who clearly didn’t value her at all. The thought made her stomach twist. After finishing breakfast, Aria changed into the clothes that had been left neatly folded on a chair. They were simple but elegant—clearly chosen by someone who understood expensive fashion. Once dressed, she stepped out of the guest room and followed the quiet hallway toward the main living area. The penthouse was just as impressive in daylight as it had been the night before. Sunlight poured through the massive windows, reflecting off the polished floors and sleek furniture. Alexander sat at a large desk near the window, reviewing something on a tablet. He looked up as she approached. “You’re awake.” “Good morning,” Aria said. Alexander studied her briefly. “You look better.” “I feel better,” she admitted. “Thank you for letting me stay.” “You’re welcome.” She sat down across from him. “I assume my disappearance has already caused chaos.” Alexander nodded calmly. “It has.” Aria sighed. “I can imagine.” He turned the tablet slightly toward her. “Your wedding has become the primary topic of discussion online.” Her eyes widened. “Already?” “Yes.” She leaned forward and glanced at the screen. Headlines flashed across multiple news sites. Runaway Bride Leaves Groom at the Altar. Business Heir Daniel Hale Faces Public Humiliation. Mystery Behind Cancelled Hale Wedding. Aria felt her face grow warm. “This is a nightmare.” Alexander closed the tablet. “It was inevitable.” “Do they know where I am?” “No.” She exhaled in relief. “At least there’s that.” Alexander leaned back slightly in his chair. “My brother has been trying to contact you.” “I blocked his number.” “A sensible decision.” Aria studied him for a moment. “You seem very calm about all of this.” “Chaos is rarely productive.” She folded her arms. “Is your brother furious?” Alexander didn’t answer immediately. “He is more concerned about the damage to his reputation.” Aria laughed bitterly. “That sounds exactly like him.” Alexander observed her carefully. “You’re not surprised by his behavior.” “I guess part of me always suspected something,” she admitted. “But I didn’t want to believe it.” He nodded once. “That’s common.” Silence settled between them for a moment. Then Alexander spoke again. “There is something we need to discuss.” Aria looked at him cautiously. “That sounds serious.” “It is.” Her stomach tightened slightly. “Alright.” Alexander stood and walked toward the window, staring out at the city below. “My family owns several major companies,” he said calmly. “Our public image is extremely important to our investors.” Aria frowned. “What does that have to do with me?” “Your wedding was supposed to strengthen a business alliance.” She blinked. “Wait… what?” Alexander turned to face her. “The Whitmore and Hale families were planning to merge certain investments.” Aria’s mind raced. “You’re telling me my marriage was partly a business deal?” “Yes.” “That’s ridiculous,” she said. “Perhaps,” Alexander replied. “But it was also very real.” She shook her head slowly. “I can’t believe this.” Alexander walked back toward the desk. “Now that the wedding has collapsed, both families are facing significant questions.” Aria rubbed her temples. “I didn’t plan any of this.” “I know.” She looked up. “So what exactly are you suggesting?” Alexander’s grey eyes met hers. “There may be a way to control the situation.” Her suspicion immediately returned. “What kind of way?” He paused briefly before answering. “A strategic solution.” “That sounds like something a lawyer would say.” “In this case,” he replied calmly, “it is something a businessman would say.” Aria narrowed her eyes slightly. “Alexander… what are you getting at?” He didn’t look away. “If the public believes that you ran away because you were involved with someone else…” Her eyes widened. “You can’t be serious.” “…then the narrative changes.” She stared at him in disbelief. “You want people to think I cheated?” “No.” “Then what?” Alexander’s voice remained calm. “You didn’t run away from my brother.” Aria’s heart began to beat faster. “Then who did I run away to?” Alexander held her gaze. “Me.” The words hung in the air between them. Aria blinked slowly. “That’s insane.” “Not necessarily.” “You’re suggesting we pretend we’re together?” “For a limited time.” She stood abruptly. “No way.” Alexander didn’t move. “You asked for freedom from the situation.” “Yes, but not like this.” He continued calmly. “If the media believes you left Daniel for me, the scandal becomes a romantic story instead of a betrayal.” Aria stared at him. “You’re unbelievable.” Alexander folded his hands. “It protects you as well.” “How exactly?” “You become the woman who followed her heart, not the woman who was cheated on.” She hesitated. The logic made sense. But the idea still felt outrageous. “And what do you gain from this?” she asked. Alexander’s expression didn’t change. “Control.” Aria crossed her arms. “You really think people will believe that I suddenly ran away with you?” Alexander gave a faint smile. “Yes.” “Why?” “Because I’m Alexander Hale.” She frowned. “And that means…?” His voice remained steady. “It means the world is used to believing whatever I tell them.” Aria stared at him, realizing just how powerful he truly was. For the first time since meeting him, she felt a strange mixture of fear and curiosity. “You’re serious about this.” “Yes.” She paced slowly across the room, trying to process everything. “Pretending to be with you… that’s a huge lie.” “It’s also temporary.” She stopped walking. “And if I refuse?” Alexander didn’t hesitate. “Then you’ll have to face the media storm alone.” Aria looked toward the window again. Reporters. Family arguments. Daniel begging for forgiveness. Her chest tightened. This arrangement was crazy. But facing the fallout alone might be worse. She turned back toward him. “I need to think.” Alexander nodded. “Take your time.” Aria walked slowly toward the hallway. But just before leaving the room, she stopped. “One question,” she said. Alexander looked at her. “What is it?” She met his gaze carefully. “If we do this…” “Yes?” “…how far does this lie go?” Alexander’s eyes darkened slightly. “That,” he said quietly, “depends on how convincing we need to be.” Aria felt her heart skip. Because suddenly… This arrangement didn’t feel like a simple lie anymore.
