Chapter 3 The Letter to mum

588 Words
Leesa and Luke Macy- (Ruby's mum & dad) “Good morning sweetheart” Luke said walking in the kitchen as I put the steaming hot toast on 2 plates on the kitchen table. “Look we got a letter, I got flowers on it?”he says frowning. I took the letter from look and squealed “ It's from Ruby '' I said happily, recigniting her handwriting. “Thank god, I was getting worried” I gasped, tearing open the envelope. While Luke picks up the coffee pot and pours us both a cup. He sits down as I read Wide eyed, “Luke” I gasp and flap a hand in his direction and with that he jumps to his feet and rushes to my side. We both read in silence for a moment and then both gasp and look at each other before blurring out random expletives. “Sh!t that's not our Ruby” look blurts as I say “This is all wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong” I said shaking my head “Police” we both say together before dashing out of the house. When we got to the police station and booked in to talk to someone and asked to wait. I felt so agitated that I couldn't sit or stand still, I found myself hopping from foot to foot or pacing where as Luke sat on one of the chairs but kept jiggling his change in his pocket and every so often crossing and uncrossing his legs. Just then an officer came to us in the waitting area and said in a bored voice “Hello Mr and Mrs Macy, I’m officer Strickland, Please follow me?” and he walked back out. Luke jumped up and we both hurried after him. After negotiating a busy bullpen with 6 desks cramped together piled high with papers and folders and busy looking officers we were led into a plain grubby room with a utilitarian table bolted to the floor and an obvious one way mirror along one wall. We sat on plastic chairs across from officer Strickland and he crossed his arms and said “well ?” and looked at us pointedly. Luke started, “ Well, our daughter is away at college and we usually get a call from her at least twice a week but we have not heard from her in over a week….” “How old” officer Strickland cut in. “Sorry” I said. “How old is your Daughter?” officer Strickland said very slowly. I was willed, he was clearly not taking this seriously ”Our Daughter is 19, but is very sensible and as my husband…” officer Strickland cut in again” Lady, I've heard this all before, Were very busy. Comeback when you have evidence” and he stood up. I was pissed then and screamed before bursting into tears “I have a letter” he looked shocked and sat down with his hand palms out in a calm down gesture and said “Okay” and I passed it to him. He read it quietly and said “ this reads like a fairytale but not particularly odd. Luke replied as I was unable to speak due to my bout of racking sobs “well you see we have never received a letter like this before, It's very fanciful and she talks about this beast and living in a cave, It's just too odd” we never usually get letters she sends Texts, emails or phone calls, maybe a card for our birthdays if she can't come home, also she is not a flowery girl, the paper is not something she would use, unicorns maybe but this is old lady paper.
