Ryker’s POV
“Did I just hear Lucy?”
The hallway was way too quiet to my liking.
I stood still, unwilling to move an inch, my ears straining. My heart was pounding uncontrollably, my wolf growling, not letting me rest even for a second.
There were no approaching footsteps.
I didn't feel a heartbeat either.
There was no trace of a faint scent suggesting she might be somehow close by; none of that happened.
All I could feel was fear, her fear as she cried for help. There was smoke from fire and wildfire close by.
I turned like I just received a sharp cut on my back, “Lucy! Where exactly are you this minute?!”
Still, I didn't receive anything, not even an assurance that she's okay.
My feet carried me, and I moved along unwillingly. They took me through the spacious corridor until we reached the back exit. The door was not locked,; it was ajar.
Outside, I could see strange marks on the gravel. There were more than one footprint; there were three, one belonging to Lucy and the other two to Vick and Selene.
My fist clenched furiously as I tried to hold myself. My rage at that point could boil water, as they had dragged her out by force, against her will.
“No... No... No... I hope she's safe.” I stormed toward the direction of my car. “I instructed her to stay inside...”
My wolf was restless, my head spinning like the ground was turning.
“She didn’t follow them on her own accord."
I growled at the thought of that. “Then, we won't hesitate to rip them apart.”
As I drove at full speed, the forest blurred away like ashes. I continued following the scent I had picked from the garden near the corridor. I could sense Selene's disgusting perfume as I made my way to whatever it was leading me.
Just when I was beginning to think out loud, they had tried to wipe it off so that no one could trace them there, and then I saw it.
It was an empty van, hidden and abandoned in the woods, very close to the cliffs.
The side door wasn't closed as I thought.
I jumped out because I didn't have time to return to normal.
“Lucy!” I screamed her name with my whole strength, running to the edge. “Lucy, please answer me!”
All I received from there was pure silence, then a scarf.
I smelled and noticed it was Lucy's scarf, which had blood on it.
My hands shook uncontrollably as I bent down to inspect it. “No... no, this can't be happening.” I collapsed to my knees immediately.
I held up the scarf to perceive her scent again, holding it to my chest. My heart was torn apart as I tried to keep myself from breaking down.
“Lucy…” My hoarse voice tried one more time to connect to her. “What evil have they done to you? How did I not notice this before?"
My wolf inside roared restlessly, making it worse. I sensed it wasn't well; it wouldn't end well at all.
“She’s forever gone. She’s gone without saying goodbye. She’s...”
“No, never!” I shouted, unable to accept the fact that I can't see her again.
“Why would they do such evil by attacking her?" My voice remained broken as my soul.
And then, it clicked like an electric current...
The dangerous cliff...
My breathing stopped immediately. I moved closer, like I was about to jump off to see if I could glimpse her body.
“No…” My voice does not agree with the possibility that they could have pushed her off the cliff. “No...please, it can never be what my mind is telling me..."
“She trusted me to protect her, but all I did was fail her.”
The air was not fresh; it was very polluted. The bond that bound us was paling out.
“I should have noticed foul play immediately they started with their wicked plan. I shouldn't have been blind to whatever they had under their sleeves...” My voice still shaking, unable to stabilize." Lucy and the babies were my whole damn world.”
My wolf broke down, threatening to tear off my skin. I shifted to accommodate my wolf, grief threatening to engulf my whole being. I howled in deep sorrow, hoping everything would soon become a dream.
It wasn't just howling, it was a mourning howl, the type no Alpha ever made. A sound of mourning for a loved one, a death song.
I paced restlessly at the river's brink, looking for a sign that she was still there or had been rescued, but there was none.
Then my wolf spoke again, in sorrow.
“This isn't how she should end, never, it can never be."
I froze on hearing that. Does it mean she's truly gone?
“We didn’t see anything relating to a body.”
But I was still hoping she was safe somewhere, in the water.
I shifted back, panting like someone who just engaged in a marathon race, clutching the scarf tighter to feel her more.
“You’re very right,” I whispered, my voice never clearing. “Selene’s clever with what she has been doing. But she forgot that she's not perfect. She’s always messy each time she’s scared. And if Lucy’s gone forever, I will definitely feel it wherever I am "
I shut my two eyes as I traveled down to search for that tether. I noticed it was still faint, but somehow, it was still there.
“Hold on, baby, wherever you are. Just hold on and don't die on me. I’m coming to rescue you.”
But the problem was, where exactly do I start tracing her to be sure I get to her on time before she does? That's if she's not dead yet, because Vick and Selene, in their cunning ways, could make something similar for me to trace in vain.
What if they had truly killed her?
What if Lucy is gone, and the heirs with her? Gone forever!
