Chapter 39: A bloodbath

1139 Words
Lucy’s POV I was actually going to die. They were everywhere—wolves with sharp teeth and angry eyes, all of them charging toward me like a pack of hungry beasts. I took a step back, but there was nowhere to run. No one to help me. This was it, the end. Or so I thought. Just when I thought it was all over, something extraordinary happened. The pain in my stomach vanished. My vision blurred for a moment… but then immediately sharpened. I could hear everything—the flutter of bird wings in the trees, the wind rustling through the grass, and the sound of every single heartbeat around me. I looked down at my hands. That's when I realized that I was glowing. A soft, eerie light surrounded me. My skin shimmered like moonlight. My hands trembled, but this time not from fear but from power. I looked to my side to see my reflection through the glass, and I was no longer myself. My eyes were black—pitch black—like two black holes in the universe. Time seemed to have slowed down for me. I watched the wolves leap into the air. Their jaws were wide. Claws reaching for me. But they moved like they were swimming through water. I could see every twitch of muscle, every breath. And then I moved first. Faster than I ever had before. I darted through them like a killer, twisting and turning. I didn’t think—my body just reacted. One wolf lunged, and I grabbed it mid-air, slamming it to the ground. Another tried to bite me, and I threw it across the yard. The power felt exhilarating. Claws tore through fur. Fangs shattered. Blood splashing everywhere. Was this me? No, it was something else. Something stronger. Something unstoppable. When the last wolf fell, I stood there panting, my arms dripping with blood. My heart was pounding like a war drum. But I didn’t feel guilty. I wasn't scared. In that moment, I felt… nothing. And then the light faded. My eyes returned to normal. My knees gave out, and I collapsed to the ground, trembling. What just happened? My vision spun as I looked around. Bodies. So many bodies. Blood everywhere. I didn’t remember any of it. But I knew I was the one who did it. “What… what have I done?” I whispered. That’s when I heard a voice. “Well, well,” someone said, clapping slowly. I turned to see Ryker’s brother standing a few feet away, untouched. Shock painted all across his stupid face. A grin. “I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said, taking a step closer. “You’re not just a hybrid, are you? It's no wonder my brother took an interest in you.” I tried to stand but my legs were weak. My entire body ached. I was covered in blood, most of it not even mine. “Stay away,” I rasped. He didn’t listen. In a blink, he was in front of me. He grabbed my neck, squeezing hard. I gasped for air, my hands flying to his wrist, trying to pull him off. With his other hand, he raised a gun and pressed it to my stomach. “No!” I choked. “Yes,” he whispered, his breath warm against my face. “Say goodbye to your freak children, hahaha.” I tried to scream, but his grip only tightened. “Any last words?” he asked, smiling like this was some joke. I couldn’t breathe. My head spun. But I manage to force out a word. “Bastard” His smile faltered. But before he could react— BANG! A gunshot rang through the air. But it didn’t come from his gun. His grip loosened. I fell to the ground, coughing, gasping for air. My vision blurred again. I blinked up through tears and saw a figure emerging from the shadows. There was no mistake. It was Ryker. His eyes were wild. His jaw clenched. He didn’t speak—he just ran straight for his brother. They crashed into each other like two storms colliding. Ryker punched him hard across the face, sending him tumbling. His brother growled and lunged back. They exchanged blow after blow—fists slamming into one another. I watched helplessly from the ground, clutching my belly. Ryker shifted first. His bones cracked, his form growing into the massive black wolf I’d seen before. His brother followed seconds later. It was a bloodbath. They tore into each other—biting, clawing, snapping. Ryker’s jaws clamped onto his brother’s shoulder and threw him like a rag doll. His brother responded by sinking his fangs into Ryker’s side. I wanted to help, to scream, to do something—but I couldn’t move. My legs wouldn’t respond. I could barely keep my eyes open. Finally, Ryker pinned him. Back in human form now, Ryker straddled his brother, raising his fist. His brother spat blood and laughed weakly. “You’re doing all this… for her?” he coughed. “A hybrid scum who doesn’t even love you? Who’s carrying nothing but abominations in her womb?” Ryker’s face darkened. He punched him hard in the gut. “Don’t you ever talk about her like that again,” Ryker growled. His brother was gasping now, struggling to break free. Ryker grabbed him by the throat. One snap, and it would all be over. His brother stared up at him, eyes wide. “I’m your blood, Ryker!” He yelled in a desperate attempt to reason with Ryker, "Does that mean nothing to you?” The silence was thick. And then Ryker let go. His brother collapsed, coughing violently. “Go,” Ryker said. “Tell the others I’m not stepping down from the throne. Not now. Not ever. As long as Lucy still breathes, my heir still stands.” His brother chuckled weakly. “You fool.” He rose slowly to his feet, spitting blood onto the grass. But as Ryker turned to me, eyes full of concern— Whoosh Something shot through the air. My eyes widened. “No…” I whispered. His brother had thrown a knife. Flying straight at me. I couldn’t move. I wanted to. I tried to. But my legs were frozen. My hand clutched my belly as pain bloomed again. I knew I wouldn’t make it. And then, just when I thought I wouldn't make it. “LUCY!” Ryker’s voice cut through the air, scattering my cloud of thoughts. He shifted mid-run, his form becoming a blur of fur as I watched him head towards me. As I watched the blade grow closer. The world slowed again. Someone screamed. But not me. Although the blade was coming at me fast, Ryker was faster.
