Logan’s POV
The very night, as I stood with my watchful eyes all over the affairs of the pack, the night had been strangely quiet. The mansion where the Alpha and his growing heirs take habitation shouldn't be this quiet. I had no doubt that all wasn't well; my instincts never lied to me, but the only problem was not being able to dictate what would happen next.
Then, as I stood by the corner, I saw her. It was Selene.
She moved effortlessly like a shadow, and in a twinkle of an eye, she slipped into the kitchen, embodying the grace of a swift cat and the cruel intent of a serpent. I hid immediately behind the pantry door to avoid being seen as I watched her aim for the fruit basket. Her fingers brushed smoothly as if caressing the apples, then concluded by picking the reddest one, and that was the very one she poisoned; I knew it within me that the maids would bring the reddest and smoothest one to her, and they didn't disappoint.
I wanted to scream, attract attention and stop her. But a great force froze me. Maybe it wasn't a force as I made it appear; maybe it was disbelief that she could gather the mind to go extreme like that, or there was a force.
She left as I regained consciousness before I moved an inch to confront her, vanishing down the hall and perfectly blending with the darkness like she was its kind.
Not long after her act, a loud scream vibrated all over the Alpha quarters, breaking the peace of the night.
“Lucy!” the midwife shouted as she labored to keep her safe on this planet and not journey beyond.
I sprinted on hearing that toward the direction the sound came from, my heart hammering, knowing so well I could have prevented that. I stood speechlessly as I lacked words to describe the scene I walked into, which was very chaotic. Lucy lay half gone on the bed, her skin ghostly pale and not the glowing, well-nourished skin. Sweat streamed continuously down her face, covering almost her face. She was shaking uncontrollably due to shock, her breaths calculated and shallow, but on touching her, it appeared rapid.
The midwife was frantic, raining curses on the maids and calling anyone to reach for help, but all her efforts were abortive, and every second appeared like an eternity. I wasn't so dumb to notice that the flashing red light from the monitor indicated the babies were still in danger.
Then suddenly, Alpha Ryker appeared, storming the gathering like a breeze with an angry mission. His eyes were wild with anger, fierce and ready to devour, but even with his wild personality, there were still traces of fear in them—I had never encountered a raw, human-like fear in the possession of any wolf, but it was present in the Alpha before.
“Lucy, please, stay with me. Please don't leave me, don't leave us,” he said, his voice breaking and holding her so tight that it could bring back her soul from journeying beyond.
He glanced in my direction, desperation boldly written all over his handsome face.
“This is not good, Logan. I don’t know what to believe again. Will she even make it?"
I swallowed hard and nodded in agreement with him.
I rushed out immediately to avoid being suspected. The sight alone could betray me, as I couldn't stand seeing Lucy that way and Alpha Ryker in his weakest moment. I walked up to the guards and issued instructions for a complete lockdown. No one should be allowed in or out of the pack. Every corridor was combed for intruders. My eyes knew who was involved and searched every shadow, maybe if I could see an accomplice with her. Selene’s poison was targeted to hurt Lucy, destroy the growing heirs, and throw the pack into a state of confusion. This, she hoped, would disorganize Alpha Ryker, and he would do the unthinkable that would leave him at the mercy of the council to continue as their Alpha.

Back in the room, Ryker had refused to take anything or even leave her side for a short rest. I heard him muttering something unpleasant to himself, “I failed woefully. I should have added more measures to protect you better.” I watched with regret as the strength of a strong Alpha crumbled, shattering into nothing but a man haunted by guilt.
Minutes were so reluctant to pass, staying even longer than hours. The midwife did her best to stabilize her. She worked smoothly with her hands, but the fears were evident in her eyes, and she failed to affirm with the words in her mouth that she would be fine. Lucy’s body trembled most scarily, as seen in most violent movies, and the monitors gave a clear picture of what she was battling with.
I caught a glimpse of the venomous snake, Selene watching with a smirk from the shadows of darkness. Her gaze alone was worse than the poison itself. I feared she might come after me if she knew I had her secret with me, but I would expose it anyway without linking myself to their pack politics.
I clenched my fists, angry at her and myself that I did nothing to stop her and to her for gambling with the future of our pack.
Suddenly, when less expected, Lucy gasped and flung her eyes open, wide with horror and confusion, but most importantly, alive and out of danger. Alpha Ryker sprang to his feet and grabbed her even tighter. I had never seen him in such a vulnerable state before, and that's to show how much he really cares for Lucy. It wasn't just for the contract of getting an heir.
“You’re going to recover and be okay; I will make sure of that,” he whispered sweetly to her.
But the problem now is, would the babies survive? Would Lucy's health deteriorate again if her babies didn't pull through? What would become of Alpha Ryker?
