Are you okay Lily? You look really disturbed
“I saw that man walk out on you, what was that all about?", Gina asked
“That rude asshole… I spilled my drink on him and tried to apologize but he just walked out like I was a fool or something “
“Ugghh..these rich men really think the world revolves around them, sorry Hun”
Just then Jeff walked to them and said, “ The auction is starting in 10 minutes “
“I wanna get home, my mood is ruined”, Lily said
“What do you mean? The auction is the best part. Stay please “, Gina pleaded
“This whole thing is boring if I'm being honest”
“Lily, do you know how hard I worked to get us these tickets? Better stay back or I'll make you”, Gina threatened with a new fire in her eyes
“Alright, let's get this over with”, Lily said rolling her eyes.
Just then, some waiters were seen bringing out exquisite and fragile looking artworks from the door that Jeff had pointed out earlier for them.
An announcer took the microphone and began to speak.
“Ladies and distinguished gentlemen, we are at the final segment of this opening. We are auctioning off out most precious works to the highest bidders right here and now.
You know how it goes.”
Lily looked around the room and noticed that everyone was now quiet and observing the artworks to be auctioned. There were a handful of older people but they were few. The audience was more of younger and middle aged new money individuals. Lily saw girls her age at the hands of sleek haired, designer clad new money techies, nerds and businessmen. She was about to gossip to Gina about a particular couple who had Gucci designers from head to toe when her eyes met….
“That asshole” She muttered under her breath as she locked eyes with the man that she had spilled her drink on.
He was also at that very moment looking at her. Lily shivered a little bit inside as he saw the icy cold stare from him. He was looking daggers at her.
She quickly averted her eyes and focused on the ongoing auction. “What the f**k else did I do to this dude? Or is it just the spilled drinks that's making him mad?”, Lily thought to herself.
“The first item to be auctioned off is titled: Renaissance. It's going for $250, 000”, the announcer boomed.
“If you're having it for that amount, put the placard up”. Three men put up their placard including the man Lily spilled her drink on who she had now termed “The asshole”.
“$300,000 for The Renaissance”, said the announcer. This time around, only two people were holding up their placards including “The asshole”.
$400,0000…$450,0000….$500,000…sold to Mr ….”
Lily didn't know her mouth was slightly open until Gina told her “Lily for God's sake keep your mouth closed and pretend to blend in”
“Are you hearing the amount of money being called out”, Lily said in awe
“Yeah, I told you this wasn't a joke. Seems your man bought The Renaissance “
“He's not my man!”, Lily retorted
“Calm down, that was a joke”, Gina said with a small laugh.
The auction continued for about 30 more minutes for six more artworks.
