Serena dashes out of the restaurant in tears and hails at a cab, “Saint Luke’s hospital, please." Serena said in tears to the cab driver, “Please hurry." A few minutes later, they arrive at the hospital. Serena pays the cab driver in a hurry. She runs into the hospital, spotting a staff member. “Hi, good evening. I’m looking for a nurse, Amy. My mom was just brought in here today." “The name of the patient, please." The staff asked , “Mrs Campbell." Serena responded, “Follow me.” The staff took her to the nurses' station to meet nurse Amy, who then took her to see her mom. . “We think your mom has been missing her treatments; luckily, your neighbors found her on time ." Nurse Amy explained, “She’s stable now, so you can see her." “Thank you so much." Serena thanked the nurse and went in to see her mother. “Hi mom, how are you feeling? I got so scared when I heard about what happened." “Oh, sweetie, I’m so sorry. I forgot to take the meds a few times. I thought I was getting better, I was feeling better, you know." “Still, you should have spoken to me about it, mom. You can’t be so sure until the doctor says so, but it’s fine. The nurse says you are stable now, so we have nothing to worry about." “Serena, can I have a word with you in my office for a bit?" Doctor Lucas interrupted, “Okay, mom, I’ll be back, just stay put.” They get into the office, and seeing the look on Lucas’s face, she already knows this is bad. “How bad is it? Please be honest with me." “It is bad, Serena. I don’t know how long your mom kept forgetting to take her meds, but it has caused great harm already. We need to intervene as soon as possible", Lucas confessed, Lucas and Serena have been friends since high school, and even though he traveled out of the country to study medicine, they stayed in touch and kept being good friends. “What does that mean, Lucas?" Serena asked, confused. She knows it is bad, but Lucas seems to look a lot more worried than she does. “Am I going to lose my mother, Lucas?,” she asked, sobbing. “If she doesn’t get a heart transplant in the next month, things could get really ugly” he responded, “Oh my God, I thought we had until next year to save enough money for surgery." Serena responded in shock. “Yeah, if she had been taking her medication judiciously, I could help you with money, but I have school debt. I’m really sorry, Serena." “Oh no, Lucas, it's fine. I understand. I’ll figure something out. Just give me a little time." “Okay then, but we’ll have to keep her here to monitor her condition just in case, so I think you should go home and get some of the things she’ll need." “Okay, thanks. Let me tell her I’m leaving.” In the room where her mother was, Serena tries not to look disturbed, so she doesn’t raise questions from her mother or make her worry. “Hey mom, they say you’ll have to stay here for a couple of days, so they can monitor your progress. I’ll have to run home for a bit, so take care. I will be back in no time." “Okay, sweetie,” her mother responded. At home, she meets Kaycee waiting, who has also been panicking since she got the news. “Hey, your back, thank God. How is mother? What happened to her? Wait, wait, where is mother?" Serena, already tired from all the stress of the day, crashes on a chair next to her. “She’s doing fine for now; she’s still in the hospital, where she’ll be monitored for some days." “That is a good thing, right?” asked Kaycee. “Yes and no." Serena explains the situation to Kaycee and how they will need to rustle up three million dollars for her mother's heart surgery before the end of the month, or the worst might happen. "Holy Moly, three million dollars is a lot of money. Where in the world are we going to see that kind of cash in such a short amount of time? " This question made Serena breakdown. She knows how bad it is, but she hasn’t really made a realization as to how bad it could get if she actually cannot come up with that amount in a month. “I don’t know Kaycee; I can’t lose my mother, she is all I have in this world." “You won't; we'll do all we can to save her." Kaycee says, hugging Serena so tightly. ************ After all the efforts to raise money for the surgery and all applications for a loan were denied, Serena came up with what she would call a last resort, which was to ask Mr. Wood Stone, her boss and basically the richest person she knows, for the money. How hard could that be? She’s a good employee who works faithfully for him, and if there was actually anyone who could help her at this point, it would be him. As she approaches the company, she feels the tension build up in her. What if he says no? “There is only one way to find out, Serena,” she says to herself before she walks in. She goes up to the floor where his office is located and speaks to the secretary. “Hi Ella, Is Mr. Wood Stone on seat?" “Yes, but he is in a meeting right now. You’ll have to wait; if you want to submit the speech I sent, you can actually leave it with me." Ella suggested, “Yeah, I have the speech, but I also want to have a discussion with him about the speech." Serena lied. After what felt like years, Mr. Wood Stone was finally done with his meeting and was escorting his guest out of his office, and then he saw Serena waiting at the desk. “Serena Hello,I did not know you were here. How long have you been waiting? Ella, you should have signaled to me that Serena was here. You know how I hate to keep pretty ladies waiting." Mr. Wood Stone and his words, “Oh no, sir, I wasn’t here for long." Serena implied, “Okay, that is fine. Come in.” Mr. Wood Stone takes a look at the speech and smiles, “As always, Serena, you are spectacular; I love it,you could have just left it with Ella; why wait?” He asks, “That is actually what I wanted to talk to you about, sir; it is about my mother. She needs surgery as soon as possible, to be more specific, before the month runs out.” She says softly, “Of course we should do something about that. How much for the surgery?" He asks, “It is three million dollars, sir.” She says, “Okay, of course, I want to help you. Okay, that is a very small amount of money to me." Serena is overwhelmed with happiness. “But, on one condition Serena, the fact that I am seeking a new bride is no news, so how about we get married, and you don’t have to worry about money for the rest of your life?"
