7: Bedroom-Scene
IT was nearly three o'clock when Callaghan heard the sound of the car coming up the drive towards the garage.
He swung himself off the bed, switched on the light, closed the bedroom door. He went to the wardrobe and took out a pair of blue sports trousers and a blue polo sweater. He put the trousers on over his pyjamas, pulled the sweater over his head, put on a pair of leather slippers.
He switched off the light, opened the door half-way, stood waiting, leaning up against the doorpost.
Two or three minutes later the passage light went on. He drew back into the shelter of the doorway, peered down the corridor.
