The Awakening

(Thea) The forest was still shaking and trembling. The glow that was under my skin had not left completely and every nerve in my body felt alive. They were pulsing and tingling like lightning on the surface of my skin. Lucien stood and watched me closely. The silver moon cast a glow in his amber eyes as I tried to figure out the look in his eyes. There was something strange about the way he looked at me. It wasn't pity or suspicion…but curiosity. I took a step backward as my hands shook. “Don't come any closer,” I cried still in shock. He lifted his hands slowly with his palms open. “I'm not here to hurt you I promise,” The wolves I had somehow knocked down groaned on the ground nearby, probably too scared to stand up. Lucien’s eyes flicked toward them, and a low growl rumbled in his chest. “Leave,” It wasn't a suggestion, it was a command from an Alpha. The rogues scrambled to their feet and vanished into the trees without a word. That was the power of an Alpha. Then his eyes came back to me. “You’ve got power, Aria. It is wild, untrained but extraordinary nonetheless. It’s no wonder the Nightshade Alpha was threatened.” My heart skipped. “You know how I am?” I asked in surprise. “Word travels fast between packs.” He stepped closer to me. He was careful and slow like he was cautious of me hurting him. “I also know you were rejected under the Moon’s witness last night.” The reminder hit like a knife in my chest. I wrapped my arms around myself. “Then you also know I’m nothing now. A rogue. An outcast.” Lucien tilted his head to the side and smiled at me. “Maybe to your old pack, but not to the moon goddess,” His tone held a bit of conviction and for a moment, I almost believed him. But the ache in my heart hadn't healed. I was deeply hurt. “Why are you helping me?,” I asked curiously as this was the first time anyone was offering me any sort of help. He smiled faintly like he understood my fear. “Because I recognize what you carry. That mark isn’t just power, it’s a legacy.” My fingers brushed the faintly glowing mark on my shoulder. “You mean this?” “Yes. The Crescent Seal.” His eyes softened. “It belonged to the old bloodline. They were a group of wolves who were said to be chosen protectors of the Moon. They vanished generations ago. Until now.” I shook my head. “That’s impossible. I’m no one.” Lucien took another step closer to me. His voice was lowered as he spoke. “You feel that energy inside you, don’t you? The way the moon responds to you? That’s no coincidence, Thea. You’re her descendant. Her direct bloodline.” His words made my heart race. The Crescent Bloodline? The stories were legends…..a group of wolves blessed by the Moon herself, protectors of balance and light. But they had been wiped out centuries ago. And yet… something in me knew he wasn’t lying. My wolf stirred restlessly within me. “That’s why we didn’t die after the rejection,” Lyra whispered. “The bond may have been broken, but the Goddess kept us alive for a reason.” I pressed my palm to my chest, feeling that faint hum again. It was softer now, but still there. “If that’s true, what do I do now?” Lucien extended a hand toward me. “Come with me. My pack lives beyond the Northern ridge. You’ll be safe there and I can help you learn what you are.” I hesitated a bit. Nightshade had been my home since birth. Even if it had broken me, leaving it behind completely felt like letting go of the last piece of who I used to be. But then I remembered Kael’s eyes, how they were cold and dismissive. How they were filled with disgust. The laughter of the pack, the slander and mockery. The pain of being nothing. I straightened up slowly. “All right. Take me with you.” Lucien nodded once like he was satisfied. “You’ll need rest and some food. You look like you’ve been running for days.” He moved toward me, and for the first time, I realized how large he was. He was broader than Kael, with a quiet authority that didn’t demand fear, only respect. His scent was different too. He smelled like wild forest and fresh rain. When my knees threatened to fail me, he caught me easily, lifting me in his arms. “Rest,” he said softly. “You’re safe now.” I wanted to protest, to say I didn’t need anyone’s help, but the exhaustion hit me all at once. My eyes grew heavy, my body giving in to the comfort of his warmth. The last thing I saw before darkness claimed me was the moonlight shining on the pendant around my neck and the faint silver glow pulsing in rhythm with my heartbeat. When I woke up, I was lying on a bed softer than anything I had ever slept on in my life. The air smelled of herbs and clean pine. I looked through the open window as sunlight streamed in, bathing the room in yellow gold. For a moment, I forgot where I was, then the door opened, and Lucien stepped in. “You’re awake,” he said. “Good. You were out for nearly a full day.” I sat up quickly, clutching the blanket closer to myself. “Where am I?” “The Crescent Pack territory,” he replied. “My healer said you were lucky to survive the rejection. Most wolves don’t recover that fast.” I touched my chest. The pain was still there, dull and aching, but not unbearable anymore. “It still hurts.” Lucien nodded. “It will, for a while. The bond may be gone, but its scar will remain.” He studied me for a long moment before speaking again. “Tell me something, Aria. When Kael rejected you… did you feel a second surge afterward? A heat, a light?” I frowned. “Yes. I thought it was the pain.” He smiled faintly. “That was your awakening. The Moon’s gift to the true heirs of the Crescent Bloodline. It only activates when the heart has been broken completely and when a wolf loses everything and yet chooses to live.” His words sank deep into me, and a strange calmness settled over me. Maybe the rejection had not been my end. Maybe it had been the beginning. Lucien moved toward the door, pausing briefly. “Rest for now. Your training begins tomorrow. You’ll need strength if you ever plan to face the Alpha who broke you.” His gaze lingered on me for a while, not with desire, but respect. “And Thea… next time you stand before him, make sure he knows exactly what he lost.” When he left, I stared out the window at the forest. The sunlight bounced off the leaves like melted silver. For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel small. The pain was still there, but underneath it, something new had begun to grow. It was power, purpose, and the quiet promise of vengeance. The Moon had taken everything from me… only to give me something greater. And I swore, under that golden light, that when I faced Kael Draven again, I wouldn’t be the girl he rejected. I would be the Alpha he could never forget.
