In The Night

1026 Words
In the alley was a sight no one could forget. The man’s lifeless form lay slumped against the cold stone wall, His skin was withered, dry, and cracked, the hollowed cheeks and sunken eyes creating a grotesque expression of sheer terror. His mouth hung open, as if to scream, but his throat had no more breath to give. The first person to discover the body was a young woman, walking briskly to her home. She froze in her tracks, her eyes wide with horror as she gazed upon the man. Her scream pierced the night, a sharp, horrified cry that echoed through the empty street. "Someone! Help!" she shouted, backing away from the grotesque scene. Her hands trembled as she reached for her phone, dialing the police. Within minutes, the quiet street became an unsettling flurry of activity. A pair of officers arrived, their footsteps quick and urgent as they approached the scene. The first officer knelt beside the body, his face growing pale as he examined the bizarre condition of the man’s corpse. "What in the world happened here?" one of the officers murmured, his voice tense with disbelief. "Who found him?" the other officer asked, standing near the young woman who had alerted them. She pointed a shaking finger toward the alley. "I... I saw him there when I passed by! He... he was just sitting there, and then I looked again, and—" she choked on her words, unable to finish. "I don’t know what happened! It’s like... like he’s been sucked dry." The officers exchanged uneasy glances, and the air seemed to grow colder. The first officer reached into his pocket, pulling out a notepad and scribbling something down. "Call for backup. And have the forensics team come in. We need to figure out what’s going on here." More police soon arrived, along with detectives and the forensics team, all visibly stunned by the scene. It didn’t take long before a quiet murmuring spread among the officers as they inspected the body, noting the unnatural dryness of the man’s skin, the absence of any visible injuries, and the eerie stillness that lingered in the alley. "It's as if... he was drained," one detective said, his voice low and thoughtful, surveying the strange condition of the corpse. "We've never seen anything like this," another officer replied. "This wasn’t just a robbery gone wrong... this was something else." As the investigation continued, no one could shake the eerie sense that something malevolent had touched the man’s life. And as the officers combed through the area, asking questions and looking for witnesses, a deeper question lingered in the air, Who, or what, had done this? Far from the chaos of the investigation, Mozs, the fox demon, watched from the shadows at the edge of the alley. She observed the scene with cold detachment, her lips curling into a sly smile. The man’s death had already sent ripples of fear through the town, and soon, word would spread of the mysterious and unnatural death. Another warning was given, another soul taken. Mozs vanished into the night, her form dissolving into the darkness as she prepared for her next hunt. The streets were hers to roam, and the men who wandered too close to their own desires would continue to fall, one by one. The alley was swarming with activity now, the distant hum of sirens blending with the hushed murmurs of officers and investigators. The body, still slumped unnaturally against the wall, was the focal point of their examination. The faint smell of decay lingered in the air, an odd contrast to the pristine stillness of the scene. An investigator, his brow furrowed as he studied the body, leaned down and gently turned the man’s arm over, examining the skin. His hand recoiled slightly. "This is strange," he muttered, a note of disbelief in his voice. "How can a body have no blood? The body is dry as paper." His words sent a ripple of unease through the crowd of officers. Another investigator, who had been crouched nearby, stood up, his face pale as he shook his head. “It doesn’t make sense. The body shows no signs of trauma. There are no cuts, no wounds... It’s as though everything inside him has simply evaporated.” The first investigator ran his gloved hand across the man’s skin again, his fingers brushing over the brittle texture. It was unnaturally dry, like the remains of a desiccated corpse left to the elements for far too long. “He should have bled out if this was a violent crime—unless...” He paused, his mind racing through possibilities. "Unless his blood wasn’t even there to begin with." "Are you suggesting... that someone drained him?" the second investigator asked, his voice cautious, skeptical, but tinged with a growing sense of dread. The first investigator stood up and looked around the scene, his eyes darting from the body to the surrounding alley. "We need to seriously consider the possibility. But this doesn’t match anything we've ever seen before. People don't just lose all their blood without any trace. And what’s with the dry skin? It’s like he’s been... drained of everything—life, vitality, blood..." The tension in the air thickened as the officers exchanged uneasy glances. The forensics team began to examine the area more closely, but it was clear that the case wasn’t going to follow the standard protocol. They were dealing with something completely out of the ordinary. One officer whispered to another, his voice shaking. "This is no ordinary crime scene. This... this feels wrong." "We’ll have to report this to the higher-ups," the first investigator said, his tone now grim. “But don’t talk about it yet. This case is unlike anything we’ve dealt with. Keep this between us for now.” As they continued to examine the body, the investigators couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling that they were dealing with something beyond their comprehension. Something unnatural. Something dangerous. And somewhere, out in the night, Mozs smiled as she disappeared into the shadows, her presence untraceable, leaving only the eerie silence in her wake.
