We head to the cafeteria. We find a table and go one by one to get our food. Once we all have our food, we start eating when Levi takes a seat at our table.
Tiffany: What do y--?
Levi: Shut up! This is between me and the crossbreed!
Me: What do you w-want from me Levi?
Levi: I want you to tell me how to wake Remy up!
Me: I don’t know how.
Levi: Bullshit Dia! You do know!
He shows his hand as it becomes a long paw and he unsheathes his claws. He looks at Jess.
Levi: Tell me or the bunny gets it.
Me: Levi please.
He stands up and starts counting down from ten. I was entering panic mode. I counter his lion with a lion but I ’m known as bunny and he knows I can serpent. As he gets to three. I quickly shift into a large python and wrap myself around him constricting him.
Me: Jess run!
Tiffany shifts into a fox and Jess shifts to a bunny then hopes on her back and they leave. Levi rakes his claw on my scales. They didn’t hurt as much when I was in human. He noticed and the sinks he fangs into me. I turn back to a human and squirm on the floor backing away. Just before he can go full human A much larger python wraps around him.
Me: Dad?!
Dad: Get home!
I quickly gather up my things and head out of the cafeteria. I head straight to the front of the school. My dad appears shortly after. He turns back to a human and wraps his arm around my shoulder and walks me to the car. We get int he car and get home. He cuts the engine off and silence follows. I look at him.
Me: Why were you there?
Dad: I saw some of the books were missing. Dia, you can’t take those to school if you want to stay low profile.
Me: It’s a bit late for that.
His eyes shoot wide open.
Dad: Why?
Me: I got caught as a bunny and Levi attacked me earlier and he saw your serpent mark. So, he thinks I’m a crossbreed and I’m sure he’s going to tell everyone else.
Dad: Do Jess and Tiffany--?
Me: They know I’m a multi-shifter. They actually have been helping me keep a low profile. But Remmy and Levi make it hard when they target me.
Dad: Is the Lion boy a presume.?
I nod my head. He lets out a sigh but then smiles.
Dad: Well, at least you’re not entirely alone when me and your mother aren’t around. I wondered how you held up for so long and now I know why.
We head inside and I go straight to my room. I pull the books out of my back and start looking over where I should start. I decide on the Ancient History of Multi-Shifters. As I read, I learned quite a bit. People didn’t like multi-shifters because they feared their true power. Apparently, each bloodline wanted complete power and the first multi-shifter felt they should have been ruler since they could tap into all shifts and abilities. Multi-shifters possessed the rare ability to access the physical forms and supernatural gifts of every known bloodline. The other bloodlines eventually united against the first multi-shifter and killed him. But they were too late. He had already fathered children with a human woman, Penelope. According to the book, carrying children of such powerful blood nearly destroyed her body. Penelope knew she wouldn’t survive their birth but refused every attempt to save herself at the expense of her unborn children. She made only one request. Every child was to be born. And they were. She died shortly after. I immediately run downstairs looking for my mom. Granted she wasn’t human, but I don’t know how she carried me and after reading that she could have been in the same position as Penelope.
Me: Dad, where’s mom?!
Dad: Still at work. Why?
Me: Dad, did mom have any complications when she carried me or gave birth?
Dad: Penelope?
I nod.
Dad: Your mother did have a complication. It was difficult to get you out because you kept shifting when the midwife was trying to get you out.
Me: Midwife?
Dad: Your mother wanted a natural birth at home. I really wish she had gone to the hospital but I’m glad she didn’t.
Me: Why? A sad look befalls him.
Dad: They euthanize multi-shifters.
Me: So, what would happen to me know if anyone found out?!
Dad: Nothing besides what you already go through now. Euthanasia is usually done at birth. Once a multi-shifter turns five, they are no longer allowed to be euthanized. Hated, shunned, and ostracized but not killed unless by natural causes.
Me: Like?
Dad: The same things that can kill anyone else. Old age. An accident. Falling to your death. Shifting into a bunny at the wrong time and getting eaten by a bear.”
Me: Why was that last one so specific?
Dad: I’m making a point. But back to your question. Besides your shifting, your mother went into a deep sleep for a few days, so it was hard to nurse you at first.
Me: Why?
Dad: Until this day, we still don’t know why and it’s not in any of those books.
I felt sick. I couldn’t believe I did that to my mother. She didn’t care about anything other than me being born. She never told me that happened. She always smiled at me and told me she was so happy to be my mother. And all this time, I’d convinced myself she was disappointed in me. I need to know more. I run back upstairs to my room and continue reading.
