Inside the building the rotund man watched as the blond girl climbed from the car and took in the building, she was to be one of his special cases. He reached for his phone and instructed his secretary to call Mr. Leeroy, before he swiftly hung up and headed for the door. He strolled through the corridors like he was walking in the park on a sunny afternoon, students scurried back to classrooms as he entered each corridor, he caught flashes of the drab brown uniforms and murky mustard colored shirts as they hurried to get out of his way. He ran the school with fear, no one cared for these girls enough for him to be worried about the consequences. No one ever questioned what happened to the girls from the locked corridor. He reached the main doors just as the receptionist had instructed the new girl to sit on the faded red chairs that sat to the side of the entrance, each chair facing inwards towards a small table stained with rings from years of coffee cups placed with no coasters, and old tattered magazines that had been thumbed through by visitors and were so out-of-date nobody would find a use for them. "Please follow me and bring along your case” he smiled a fake smile at the young girl who sat meekly in one of the chairs. He waited for her to get to her feet with her case in hand before he began leading her deeper into the belly of the school. He passed many of the classrooms as he took her to the back of the school to the corridor where he kept his special girls. The only sounds he heard as he moved through the barren hallways were the sounds of his and the girl’s feet. He was happy this girl seemed very easy to control, he hoped Mr. Leeroy was happy this time. After many corners and short stretches of corridor they arrived at a door with a number lock pad, checking the girls eyes were down he entered the code and pushed the heavy door open. The door had no window and the lighting as they entered the area was dull and orange from the old bulbs spread sporadically down the ceiling, this area was once the secure ward of the old hospital. The man began to move to the far end where a door stood open waiting. Ava followed the man beyond the door with the keypad, the hallway beyond was grim with heavy looking metal doors lining the walls, the doors each had small windows at head height and a large letter box shaped opening below that. The door at the far end stood open waiting for Ava, it sparked a pool of dread to form in her belly as the stepped closer and closer. Inside the room stood a metal bed frame with a dusty mattress, someone had folded a pile of ugly brown and mustard uniform next to a pile of crisp white bedding and towels. The room also held a simple bedroom set in plain pine with a small desk pushed into the corner by the bookcase. The bookcase held a shelf filled with tattered books and paper with a pot filled with pens and pencils. Behind the door was a small wash area with a dirty looking sink built into the top of the toilet. Ava was reminded of the toilets in the prison movie she had watched with her father. "Here is your new schedule and a list of expectations, stick to them or there will be consequences" the man spoke with a gravelly voice like he had smoke for several years. Ava shuddered as he pulled closed the heavy door and the lock thudded into place. Ava slowly unpacked her case and placed things where she thought they would be easy to locate when she needed them. Next she made the bed and placed the towel over the back of the hard plastic chair that was pushed under the desk. After she had finished Ava flopped onto her bed and brushed her fingers along the side of her parents faces in the pictures she had hidden in her case. Ava found herself remembering the many trips she had taken with her father, he had loved to spoil her and would take her shopping to see the smile as she tried on the beautiful items in each store. Her favorite memory was a trip they had taken to New York City to shop for Christmas. They had spent hours in the department store trying on dresses and suits to attend the ball her father held every Christmas for the employees of his company. She had tried on a beautiful silk dress, in a red so rich it would rival the blood red lips of Snow White. It had come with a white fur shawl and long white gloves and her father’s eyes had sparkled when he saw his beloved daughter walk to the small stage in front of the dressing rooms. Ava had thought it was too expensive, but her father brought it anyway and smiled as he did so. Later that night as Ava was getting ready for the ball her dad had knocked softly on her door and presented her with a beautiful gold bracelet that matched the necklace her mother had left her. It had small charms placed evenly around, a small copy of the wolf from her mother’s necklace, and a delicate looking golden crescent moon at the end with a tiny heart shaped ruby that looked like it was glowing when the light caught it just right. It had been an early birthday gift as her birthday fell on Christmas. This was the night her father would meet Sarah his new love and bride to be. If only Ava had know, she would have held him a little longer and maybe they wouldn't have ran into the woman that had destroyed her life
